Do you have carpet in the living room?

littlewonderss · 16/03/2025 10:29

In the process of replacing my living room floor, at the moment we have a very dark brown carpet which is hideous, from the last owners.

I like how laminate / lvt can be cleaned and we are a household that spills stuff regularly.

My front door is in the living room, there is no hallway. Stairs also in living room.

Currently we eat in the living room, but are in the process of rearranging the kitchen so we can fit a table and chairs in there.

However, carpet looks so much cosier, the house already feels / looks cold with the front door being in the living room.

WWYD?

Normally I'd say carpet in living room, but yours is working very hard and I'd go for laminate/lvt for hard-wearing/cleaning and a rug under the sofa area for cosy zone

Birdseyetrifle · 16/03/2025 10:34

I have carpet as house is so cold. However, I wish I’d part tiled the walkway from the front door, stairs to the kitchen. If that makes sense.

Devilsmommy · 16/03/2025 10:34

With the door opening into the living room I'd definitely get a good scotch guarded carpet if you're a spiller

littlewonderss · 16/03/2025 10:35

We already have coin matting / door mat built in by the front door also

From your title, I was all for carpet.
However having read the layout, a hard floor and a big rug would get my vote.

littlewonderss · 16/03/2025 10:40

Alternatively if I did put carpet in, I could make our back door the main door we use to go in and out the house so we wanted via the kitchen.

No, we ripped up the carpet and laid a lovely wood floor. Our house is busy, the wood is so easy to keep clean. There’s underfloor heating though so it’s not cold.
we have carpets upstairs but hard floors all throughout the downstairs.

BlumminFreezin · 16/03/2025 10:43

No...our main living room is at the back with double doors opening onto the garden. It would be filthy in no time 😂

We have hard floors throughout the entire downstairs and a large rug in the lounge. We also have a carpet cleaner and the main rug needs a good clean at least every other month.

The thought of wall to wall carpets downstairs is 😱 for me. I honestly don't know how people keep them clean with kids/pets/visitors/life. I'd really hate to have to be 'careful' in our living spaces. With hard floors, if someone drops a drink or one of the dc perches on the sofa to eat a yoghurt and drops some or someone brings the dog back from a walk and she's covered in mud it's no problem.

Ddakji · 16/03/2025 10:43

We have wooden floors as per when we bought the house but I would much prefer carpets. Warmer, softer underfoot and they absorb sound.

TheAmusedQuail · 16/03/2025 10:44

I have a huge living room in an old house. I put carpet down 10 years ago, because I wanted it to be warm. It IS warmer than wood/laminate. But the carpet is wrecked now and needs replacing. It's going to cost near on 2K to replace (cost 1K 10 years ago).

I'm replacing it with laminate this time. I don't really like laminate. Think it looks cheap and nasty, but keeping carpet clean with children and pets is almost impossible.

HomeBodyClub · 16/03/2025 10:45

We had carpet but our living room is tucked away so you only get access to it when you go in there to relax.

In your case I’d go for hard flooring.

WickWood · 16/03/2025 10:46

Our house layout sounds exactly the same as yours, there was carpet when we moved in, however we ripped it up and put hard flooring down. So, so glad we did, especially now we have a baby and cats. It's so much easier to clean and I think it looks far better too. It takes honestly minutes to sweep and mop and it looks as good as new, carpet in a room with such high footfall will undoubtedly stain easily x

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/03/2025 10:46

We have wooden floors downstairs with big rugs for coziness.

I’d happily have wood floors upstairs too but it’s not something we’ve got around to.

This. Exactly what I was going to say

PoppyBaxter · 16/03/2025 10:56

We have carpet in the living room, but we have a separate hallway.

Even so, we went for charcoal grey as it hides so much dirt and wear and tear. With a dog and a clumsy husband, we couldn't keep a pale carpet clean.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 16/03/2025 11:14

Controversial but I'm really wanting to get carpet in my living room

It's cold and tbh I'm kind of over laminate. We don't have nice wooden flooring underneath 😭

zingally · 16/03/2025 11:16

Some years ago, while I was still renting, so not the decision maker, my friend turned her lovely cozy lounge carpet to a wood floor. But not a high quality one. And I hated it from the first moment I stepped foot on it. It made the room feel so much colder, and the worst thing of all, the room now echoed! Every time their lovely dog barked, it would echo and my ears would crackle. Not to mention every scream or shriek from their then-toddlers. Absolutely awful.
I made the decision there and then that I'd never do a hard floor in my living room.

I'm a fairly new home owner, and my living room carpet is a bit past it's best. The previous owner had two large hairy dogs. But when I have the time and finances to replace, I'll only consider carpet.

Normallynumb · 16/03/2025 23:08

I have Polyflor Camaro LVT throughout my kitchen/ living room/ diner
its fantastic and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s actually quite warm underfoot, and gives very slightly so much nicer to walk on
so easy to care for and looks great

PickAChew · 16/03/2025 23:13

I'd have hard floor and a big thick rug where you sit. No soft flooring is too cold and clattery but carpet would probably be impractical for your layout unless you had somewhere to keep a carpet washer.

Same for me.

We have carpet, and I MUCH prefer carpet, BUT, we have a hall.

Ketzele · 16/03/2025 23:34

Hard floor and rugs is the way to go - washable rugs.

Ohthatsabitshit · 16/03/2025 23:40

We have floorboards with rugs.

LastTwoBraincellsFightingFor3rdPlace · 16/03/2025 23:41

We have laminate, but we’re hoping to have hardwood floor in our lounge at some point this year.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/03/2025 07:57

Can you get under floor heating

LuckyShark · 17/03/2025 09:03

I'd look for end of roll carpet and see if you can get a bargain. In a darker colour if possible to hide stains.
Then you can get a better quality carpet. 80/20 wool to polyester is said to be the best.

I have had it down in my through lounge with stairs (I do have a hall but it is 2 steps and we are a shoes on family - im going to get the collective MN ick now)
Anyway it's been down 10 years and is still like new.

We also have a eufy cleaner and I run it every day so I only need to properly vacuum once a -week- fortnight.

Wooden floors are so cold unless you can afford the best ones.

In my last house we had a wooden floor with the door opening off the street and it was so dusty. Carpet made it look better, although the dust was still there it was hidden. We just vacuumed every day.
