Clothes all ‘ousy’ after washing!

Is that how you spell it? Anyway, MIL was over a couple of weeks ago and her dryer had broken so I said she could use our washer dryer in the meantime. She only had uniforms and a bath mat to dry but the bath mat has since left everything we wash covered in Ouse. I have attached a pic so you can see what I mean.

I have done a cleaning cycle since then but it’s not helped. After each drying cycle, I wipe out any of that fluff the dryer leaves, so I’m not sure what’s doing on, but it’s driving me mad!

any tips please :)

I've never heard of ouse, is it some kind of liquid/fabric conditioner?

NewMarmiteJar · 15/03/2025 15:48

I’d never put a bath mat in with clothes.

I’ve never heard the term ouse / ousy in my life so very intrigued by that, I am guessing you mean slightly covered in annoying fluff bits?

Maybe try a wash and dry with some towels? They might be better at capturing any residual fluff and it wouldn’t matter so much if they got some on them.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 15/03/2025 15:53

Are you Scottish OP? Do you mean oose, as rhymes with moose? That’s what I’d call what you’ve shown in the picture. It’s like sort of fabric dust?

soupyspoon · 15/03/2025 15:55

Sticky roller surely

What is ouse, ousey?

Dusty, fluffy, bitty, saggy?

embolass · 15/03/2025 16:10

Scot here and know exactly what u mean! Wash dark things together and use vinegar in place of fabric conditioner- it’s supposed to help ouse / hair be rinsed away at end of wash cycle

ReginaaPhalangee · 15/03/2025 17:02

Haha yes I’m Scottish. It’s like my clean clothes (which I wash in colours, darks, white etc) are covered in a layer of dust. Tried washing them without fabric softener too and it’s not helped.

it wasn’t me who put the bath mat in, it was MIL. Just annoyed me that all my darks look dusty lol

It’s Scottish. My gran said oose. It means fluff

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 15/03/2025 17:09

Try the vinegar trick as mentioned. It should sort itself out eventually, but maybe one of those microfibre catcher things you can get for your washing machine would help.

Dearg · 15/03/2025 17:14

Try a full cycle with an old towel , might pick up any bits left in.

I’m also a Scot and in this house, fluff that collects in your belly button is known as oosy fluff . I have no idea why it’s that specific.

beetr00 · 15/03/2025 17:17

@ReginaaPhalangee there's usually a fluff filter behind the bottom panel of your machine, could be clogged? Could also wash your darks inside out? 😉

Coffeeishot · 15/03/2025 17:20

Run your washing machine on its own with a colour catcher or baby wipe it should catch it all then just wipe out the machine run a long cycle.

Coffeeishot · 15/03/2025 17:21

Yes a towel works too.

ReginaaPhalangee · 15/03/2025 17:24

Thanks all! Will do the towel trick and try vinegar
