Aldi and Lidl upset me with their inconsistent product ranges

I used to buy, in bulk, in Lidl, their deluxe nut bar things, there were a range of flavours, the combination of calories, protein, flavour and that they werent full of artificial (too much) ingredients was just perfect.

Now gone, down to my last box and went in to find they dont do these any more

I buy a lot of Aldi, hard goats cheese, it comes in a very thin wedge. Im down to my last one in the fridge. Went in the other day to find, no hard goats cheese. Im going to try another location today but there was no ticket on the shelf for it so that has also gone

Really annoys me

I think its me because almost every single perfume that I fall in love with gets discontinued as well.

I must like really unpopular things!

@soupyspoon i love these too! A big absence over the new year but I got cherry ones last week.

It's why I rarely shop there. I only buy toilet rolls, tissues, dishwasher tabs etc.

They're also hopeless for gluten free and allergies. Fruit and veg only come in huge bags, I only want one pepper or couple of carrots.

soupyspoon · 15/03/2025 10:50

Lots of things in there that I prefer compared to branded items and other shops though, so meatsters is a case in point, they are better than pepperami. Ive never seen the type of goats cheese they do in there as nice as that anywhere else, those nut bars not seen the same combination of flavours, fruits, nuts, protein for the same calories. Lidl used to do pre poached salmon, two fillets, far superior to Marks and Spencers ready cooked salmon.

Theres tons more

Nature of supermarkets I'm afraid! But I agree, Aldi and Lidl are the worst for it! But on the up side, there's always something new to try!
Tesco are guilty of it as well. They, until recently, did a lovely potato croquette with cheese in their fresh section. Gone now. :( I'd have bought out the shop and frozen them had I known.
Fortunately I've discovered Cathedral City do a fair dupe in their frozen food range. Not quite as good, but very reasonable.

Agree with you about bags of veg and fruit, but all supermarkets are guilty of this, if I want to buy single items I have to go to the greengrocer and pay more for that one item than a bag of carrots for example, the problem is a lot of it goes in the bin, so there are particular foods I dont even eat because of that.

RIP the 90% chocolate at Lidl.

OP aldi def have the nut bars. My DH doesn't like the lidl ones only the aldi ones. The box is now turquoise( it was black).

FuckityFux · 15/03/2025 11:00

I love Lidl and Aldi chocolate here in Ireland. It’s really good quality.

I think their Lidl deluxe chocolate eggs are made by Skelligs chocolate from County Kerry (according to a friend who knows everything). 😂

I’m certain their Roisin chocolate is made by Lilly O’Brien. 😋

I used to be a Waitrose shopper in the UK but the variety and quality of locally produced food items over here, knock Waitrose into a cocked hat. 😆

TourangaLeila · 15/03/2025 11:13

I will never understand how people can say that they can't ever do a full shop at Aldi or Lidl.

All the things your listing are nice to haves. You can always get all of your basics at both stores. At least where I am. But we can't afford to buy lots of "bits we fancy" so standard meals it is.

Only thing I can't get thay I use regularly is marjoram. So every now and then when I'm going there anyway I pick up a pot from tesco.

soupyspoon · 15/03/2025 11:17

Ive been on the Aldi web site, doesnt even seem to be a way to email them

Thanks! My local one hasn't had meatsters in over a month now. Nor even the new little ones. Just pepperami which isn't as good. Agree Lidls version isn't as good either (but it's better than the branded version).

I tend to do 90% of my shop at either Lidl or Aldi but there are a couple of things I do go to other places for simply because they have a bigger range.

I don't get the whole 'i can't do a proper shop' though - it is frustrating they don't do everything in one place but it's also not the end of the world. If I had to I could just do Lidl or Aldi, but the bottom line is I don't want to.

Aldi is better at certain things, Lidl is better at certain things and the other supermarkets all have their strengths. I know what lines I like at each supermarket and shop accordingly.

Tesco is just wall to wall blandness and ready meals these days. Aldi and Lidl keep me interested and buying something different rather than being stuck in a rut with cooking. And the shopping experience at Tesco is just soul destroying.

We’re lucky in that Aldi is next door to a massive Tesco so I go into Aldi first for the ‘interesting things’ then go next door for the rest of the stuff.

loadalaundry · 15/03/2025 11:31

they probably became too expensive cost price wise

Does your supermarket not do any loose fruit and veg?

No, not really, I went into Asda the other week for one leek, one carrot and one very small bunch of celery. Could only find trimmed celery for more than a normal bunch (I only needed one stem of celery), no single carrots and no single leeks.

Potatoes are another, cant find single potatoes or just a few new potatoes

This is essentially what I do. I deliberately go to a branch next door to another supermarket.

Is it that they've discontinued them or just don't have any at the moment? I love those particular bars, first had them about 4 years ago, but they're not always available. (Might have a look later)

Aldi Dark chocolate & Seasalt nut bars were in Aldi last week, they’re next to the coffee.

I will try these but Lidl had 4 different flavours and that wasnt my favourite one.

The best one by far is the cherry and cashew. Aldi dont replicate that one

These bars sound delicious, must get some! Always preferred Lidl and Aldi chico to Cadburys

BestIsWest · 15/03/2025 13:12

Well, I can report success on both the cheesecake and 70% chocolate in Aldi this morning. must be my lucky day.

AtomicBlondeRose · 15/03/2025 13:14

I loved those nut bars and the good cereal bars. Now they only sell the gross UPF ones with sweeteners and all sorts of crap in. They’ve gone big on the protein ranges but there’s vanishingly few products in the range without sweeteners which is so annoying. The nut bars were perfect for me!
