Why does Oxbridge do this? Do you know any Students like this?

janeeire244 · 15/03/2025 01:15

Why are there so many students at Oxbridge who study competitive degrees like law with relatively low A-level grades such as anything below 3A*s but also including AAA or even AAB? Most of these people applied with inflated predicted grades but are let in when they get lower grades than they were predicted either because they still met the really low entry requirements (shockingly Oxford Law is at AAA) or if they miss it and get AAB, they are reprieved?

I don’t even think it’s fair to say that they shone at some other stage of the application process because I know of some students who got relatively low admissions test scores or mediocre GCSEs and got in as well.

This is all the while they reject people with much high admissions test scores or much better grades.

That being said I’ve never heard of anyone who did poorly on the interviews get an offer (poorly by Oxbridge standards not just them thinking they did badly).

Do you know anyone at Oxbridge studying a degree (especially a competitive one like law) with an average admissions test score or below average; or less than 3A*s at A-level?

What a nit picky response!

What is Cambridge except the sum of it’s colleges then?

Edited

And? In what way was your correction not nitpicking? What relevance does your correction make to the OP’s basic gripe that they should have got their place at Cambridge and it was not fair they didn’t get in? Does it actually make a substantive difference to anyone’s argument that Cambridge only very rarely lets students in with lower grades (particularly in hugely popular courses like law), that Oxford more often does, and other universities more often still?

It is also hard to tell whether it’s the student posting or their mother, or just a fantasist who never applied to Cambridge in the first place, because they seem somewhat uncertain about their real identity themselves.

Tbf you seem just as invested in all this gobbledegook as the OP is.

🤣 They have certainly irritated me, it is fair to say! 🤣 Millions of people suffer more serious setbacks and disappointments every day, yet this poster has now gone on and on and on about their sense of injustice for months on end, now.

My dc is at Oxford. Needed 3xA got 2Astar and 1 B. Theoretically missed their offer but was accepted with a lovely email saying they really wanted them there. The B was in one of subjects being studied too.
The application process there is about the whole person.

They have a SEN diagnosis, I’m guessing they are autistic from all their posts. What’s your excuse?

I doubt they’re going to give up talking about this any time soon. There will be more threads.

A desperate attempt to persuade them to stop posting. If they are a real person, I don’t think they come across as autistic.

FWIW I think that the refusal to see it through any lens through their own and rigid thinking can be indicative of autism presentation in some YP.

Plenty of people at Oxbridge are neurodiverse in any event, it isn't unusual at all. Plenty of people who didn't get an Oxbridge offer are autistic, my DS in one of them but he wasn't expecting special treatment in the admissions process.

Blushingm · 21/03/2025 18:30

You do realise universities are not obliged to take anyone - they can chose who to admit. No one has a legal right to a place on a course just because they think they’re better than someone else

it’s the same as if you apply for a job and meet all the criteria, the employer doesn’t have any legal obligation to give you the job

Is it? Who knew and more importantly who cares!

Seems odd to keep track just to lambast the person behind the screen.

It's been picked up, as it is unusual to see such a myriad of threads in such a small space of time, about such a niche topic.

I don't tend to take much notice of who is posting on MN, I tend to just jin the discussion, BUT when someone keeps saying the same thing over and over, it is noticeable.

Well, it’s been mentioned several times on the thread. That’s how I knew.

Do keep up… Particularly when you’re so keen to tell people off for wrong think.

'wrong think' oh no, you're not one of them are you- can see why you enjoy having a go at vulnerable people now!

They come across as narcissistic and willing to lie and commit fraud to get into Oxford or Cambridge. Those are not autistic traits, imvho.

It doesn’t. As I said, I wasn’t responding to the OP. I was responding the person that backed up their pretty rude response with an incorrect answer. If you’re going to kick someone then at least base your rebuff on accuracy.

I didn’t say you were responding to the OP. I asked you what difference your rebuke made to the OP’s gripe. If it makes no difference to the OP’s complaint, then you are doing nothing more than nitpicking.

Walkaround · 21/03/2025 21:09

And it is not a good look to tell others off for being rude whilst you are being rude and patronising yourself.

Walkaround · 21/03/2025 21:54

And sorry to have to point out the obvious, but if you are so very interested in accuracy and correctness, then why did you object to it being pointed out that there is a difference between being accepted by Cambridge university and being accepted by a Cambridge college?

Walkaround · 22/03/2025 03:23

@janeeire244 - I’m sorry if you are a real person and my posts have been hurtful to you. Rejection stings for everybody. Please use that rejection to spur you on to do brilliantly at a university to which you have applied honestly and fairly and do not keep harking back to what you missed out on and arguing that Cambridge was wrong. Your success and proof of ability are not dependent on getting into Oxford or Cambridge, they are dependent on your ability to cope with setbacks with dignity and integrity, to pick yourself up, to carry on and do well wherever else you go and whatever else you do. Don’t keep looking back at what it is too late to change, you are learning nothing from doing that. Find yourself a new focus.

Oxford and Cambridge have multiple excellent candidates to choose from and they cannot choose them all. Rejection from Cambridge does not mean you are inadequate (unless you persist in defining inadequacy as not getting all A stars at A-level), it does not mean they were wrong not to take you, it simply means you were not one of the people who got chosen. This will not be the only time in your life you feel you could have and should have succeeded but didn’t get the opportunity to prove it. The mark of a successful, clever person is that they find new and different opportunities elsewhere. Unsuccessful people don’t do that, they instead give up altogether, or convince themselves that they are victims who were unfairly treated and never get over it. Be successful - prove yourself elsewhere.
