I don’t understand this life question

So, there are many things that feel great for a human, and have a purpose.

Sex feels good, and it ensures reproduction of the human race.

Exercise releases endorphins, makes you feel good and is good for your body.

So why does (for example) alcohol make you feel great, when it is terrible for your body?

Why does fatty or sugary food taste so good to us, when it is not healthy?

Surely fruit and veg should be amazing to eat and we can’t get enough of it. But instead so
many people struggle to eat it.

Yes I’m having thrilling Friday night at home with my thoughts!!

The food thing is easy. Food wasn't plentiful and always available like it is nowadays. Therefore when we did find food, it made sense to eat the most calorific food available because we didn't know when we would eat again.

No idea about alcohol though...I will say it doesn't make me feel good though.

Alcohol is good for you in small amounts, thinking about the heart health and longevity studies re wines for example. It's excess that isn't good.

alcohol = confidence + loss of inhibitions.
We were made to take risks.

Fruit does taste great though - nature's sweets

Bad foods trigger brain receptors in the pleasure area for most people which is why we want more

The food question is easy and has been answered.

You have to learn to like alcohol. Children don’t like the taste of it whereas they do like doughnuts. Alcopops which disguise the taste of alcohol are popular for a reason.

LaPalmaLlama · 14/03/2025 20:15

Yeah it’s kind of weird that as soon as we got upright we thought “right, how can I get high?” But yes, possibly associated with the benefit to wider society of individuals being prepared to take more risks.

There are no bad foods, just bad diets.

We like fat because we need it to survive. Fat is good for us snd essential. Excessive fat is not. We like sweet things as they are high calorie and sweet fruits are high in nutrients. Most of human history was about finding enough food, not dieting in a world of excess food.

I reckon if we didn't have easy access to processed food with high sugar content we would be much more likely to eat more fruit, because we would crave the natural sugar and wouldn't be able to find it so easily elsewhere.

Speaking as someone prone to alcoholism, drinking does not always feel great!

pressureonjulian · 14/03/2025 20:25

Food high in fat/ sugar gives your brain a massive dopamine hit. That’s what becomes addictive.

Alcohol creates a sensation of relaxation and lowers inhibition. It also causes dopamine to be released.

The human brain has not evolved to be perfect.

Human beings have an innate desire to party, in my observation.
