Dd 11 in year 6 is having friend troubles- she's never really had a best friend its always a group, no one quite matches her, some girls aren't being tbe nicest but I'm trying to encourage resilience and also encouraging how to stand up for herself as well as cutting some girls slack as hormones are all over the place! Dd hasn't started period but some friends have and I think they're all- dd included- just hormonal! I also don't want to excuse bad behaviour by others and lack of tolerance/sensitivity by dd. Only a few months to go but she's teary tonight feeling she hasn't got good friends.... any one relate? Advice? Parents Evening coming up so I might mention it....

She’ll be up in secondary school soon enough and can make a whole new friend group
Year 6 is a strange one - I found that the kids were all maturing at different rates - my DD is a bit more naive and didn’t fit with some of the girls she had grown up with but when she got secondary she found her people and is so much happier
Its horrible saying to your child just put up with it for a few more months but in reality you can’t force friendships and the teacher is unlikely to be able to do anything

Thanks- I know you're right.

Talk up secondary.
Find her a couple of out of school activities if she hasn't already. Having friends who had nothing to do with the class bitchiness was a lifeline in a similar situation.

Whenever my dd used to have friendship problems I'd ask her to invite someone round after school or at the weekend so that she could build friendships one on one away from the school premises.

It was only ever one girl who caused problems but she used to try and isolate dd.
It is worth mentioning it to the school but don't be surprised if they say everything is fine as sometimes it can be one little incident that they tell us about in a whole week of good things that they never mention.
I think that by year 6 they can be a bit sick of the same faces after so many years together but once they're at high school they have a lot of new people to make friends with, my dd is year 7 and has totally ditched the majority of her primary friends except 3 and has made a lovely group of new ones.
