If you were a teen in the 90s did your mum spend a lot of time telling you that she was on a diet?

Quoting her current weight. The weight she was at school. Whether she put in weight over the holidays or not. And also going on fad diets. Ryvitas, slim fasts etc.
And saying things to you about how you should watch your weight and whether or not clothes are slimming etc etc
this is what my mum did. And her weight was fine. Slim. Basically size 10 I would say.

i am just wondering how normal this was for that generation. It really messed me up and I feel sad for my teenage self

The 80s but yes. Constant. And telling me I needed to be on a diet too, despite being underweight.

Lentilweaver · 13/03/2025 22:32

No. We don't do dieting in our family.
My mum spent most of my teenhood trying to fatten me up.

Rivari · 13/03/2025 22:32

My mum was always on a diet, usually of Crispbreads, she would talk about being dumpy (short and fat) a lot and I was very aware of her food issues.

HansHolbein · 13/03/2025 22:33

Constantly, and she was slim!

HomeBodyClub · 13/03/2025 22:34

Never.

Bartg · 13/03/2025 22:34

I think it was a generational thing wasn’t it. When I hit puberty I really struggled with changing shape and I couldn’t just enjoy being a teenager and allowing myself to be healthy and normal size

No not at all. I still ended up with an eating disorder in my teens

Nsky62 · 13/03/2025 22:34

No

Aworldofmyown · 13/03/2025 22:35

God yes, anyone else remember the 'Special K' diet?
Pots of Slim Fast - i reckon my mum was a 10-12 back then.

albalass · 13/03/2025 22:36

No, my mum never mentioned her weight or diets ever. In the 90s I was a teen and she was in her 40s. She wasn't into fashion and didn't really wear makeup. I think the lack of focus on appearance was a positive for me and siblings.

Yes she did all these. And she was tiny. No need to lose any weight at all

@Aworldofmyown Wow that brought back some memories! There even used to be adverts on the TV about it!

My mum wasn’t really into appearance either. Never wore make up and was quite outdoorsy . But still was afflicted by this

No.

CostcoBuns · 13/03/2025 22:38

My mum's still at it now, she's in her late 80's.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 13/03/2025 22:38

I’m in my 50s and my mum has been on a diet my whole life.

ChilliLips · 13/03/2025 22:38

Yes she never lost any weight though.

Bartg · 13/03/2025 22:38

It’s such a shame isn’t it.

Yes and took myself and sister to slimming clubs with her. Not to be weighed though.

lavenderlou · 13/03/2025 22:39

My Mum didn't talk about it lots but she always ate considerably smaller portions than the rest of us and I was aware of her dress size and weight whereas I'm sure my DC wouldn't have a clue about mine. She also used to read women's magazines which were 90% full of diet advice and slimming tips. I did have disordered eating as a teen but can't say it was related to my Mum any more than to the prevalent attitudes of the era.

jjeoreo · 13/03/2025 22:39

Not on a diet but very fat phobic and a phenomenally faddy eater. She has a BMI of 18 now, we are the same height and she's probably a stone lighter than me. Says she wouldn't want to be any heavier. It definitely fucked with my head and I always wanted to be smaller to make her proud of me.

I'm so over it now though, thank god!

ExtraDecluttering · 13/03/2025 22:39

Yes (in the 80s) and still ongoing.

Lanifers · 13/03/2025 22:39

Yeah and I got put on one too!

Lentilweaver · 13/03/2025 22:40

I don't think my mum has ever mentioned her weight or been on a diet. And she's 80.

Exactly this for me as well.
