Bus queue

I have noticed recently that no one seems to queue for the bus anymore, it’s simply a case of who can get on quicker. Take today bus arrives mum and her kids push in front of me and my children and then take the seats on the bus. I always let whoever was in front of me on first but it seems no one else does this anymore. So is queuing for the bus no longer a thing? I don’t want to keep waiting when no one else seems to bother if it’s no longer expected. Only one bus comes to this bus stop so the mum would have known I was waiting for it but this happens pretty much every day now seems people stand as close as possible and hope to quickly get on first. Do you let people on who was there first or do you just push on and think it’s a case of whoever is the quickest?

I absolutely detest this, it’s just a free for all nowadays.

It’s been getting progressively worse where I am for around the last 20 years. For many years I patiently stood back as I used to refuse to have these rude people modify my behaviour, and I did not want to push in front of anyone else. Unfortunately the buses often become so crowded here that this meant I couldn’t fit on many buses as they’d been filled up and I’d have to wait for the next one! Many people actually physically push you here too (Greater London).

I hate pushing in, and I always try and let people on first who were waiting before me, it’s just basic manners and common sense to queue and be courteous - or at least that’s how you and I were bought up OP. I’m sick of the free for all that bus stops have become.

It's queues round here, except if there is someone who is clearly struggling when people tend to stand back and wave then on first.

aintnospringchicken · 13/03/2025 21:52

If there are only a couple of people at the bus stop when I get there, I will let them get on the bus first.
I’ve been at bus stops with over 20 people waiting when the bus arrives( not everyone actually queues at the stop, but stand in the vicinity), it is difficult to know who was there first ,so in that situation so I would let a few on before me then board the bus ahead of some others. It’s very tricky when there are many people all wanting on the same bus but I’ve found most people are reasonable and there’s no mad scrabble to board the bus.

Interesting. The opposite of the annoying problem occurring in pubs, where people have weirdly started queuing!

the80sweregreat · 13/03/2025 21:58

My bus tends to stop where it likes ( there are two stops really close to each other and it's become a lottery as to where it'll stop )
People are randomly trying to second guess where it'll stop and nobody queues up anymore. It is just a free for all.

Nope just me and the mum today but like I said this is a regular occurrence it’s just today that wound me up as I see this mum every day so she knew we was getting on the bus not like she didn’t and only one comes there if she is ever there first I always stand back.

I don't know how you can tell who was waiting before you. Bus stops near me have 5 bus routes or more stopping them, and if you wait around to see who might be getting on the one you want and checking if they were there before you, the bus driver will have driven off without stopping because you haven't moved to the stop and signalled for it to stop. People just want everyone to board and for the bus to move on as quickly as possible, there isn't time to make a fuss over who got there first as long as everyone gets on.

Explained only one bus comes to this stop

It’s everyone just hanging about that’s the problem: especially if several buses use the same stop: so it does descend into who dares, wins.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/03/2025 22:03

I think it starting when we joined the EU (well, the Common Market in those days) and adopted the 'European' method of getting on a bus.

One hopes that with Brexit the previous 'Orderly British Queue' will gradually become the norm again.🙏

Unlike a tube, where the majority of the doors are fairly lined up and stop at almost the same point each time- a bus does not! I've been at a bus stop and there has been a vague queue- but then the bus stops much further up the road or in other cases, behind another bus. Its then a free for all who gets to the door first.

Do you let people on who was there first..... 😬

I understand OP that this stop only has 1 bus, but did it stop exactly where the start of the queue was? If not, I wouldn't expect others to wait for the person standing at the front to walk to the door first.

LemonNLimes · 13/03/2025 22:22

we Was both waiting by the bus stop but it doesn’t always stop at the same place so it was ever so slightly closer to her, personally I stand a little back and give space if I see someone there I don’t stand as close to them as possible hoping it will stop nearer to me but if no one else does this or it’s not expected then I won’t in future and will just get on first that’s why I’m asking.

Yes largely where I live at least the first few people in the “queue” (such as it is) get on first. Elderly people also waved on ahead. Mums with buggies tend to go on last as the place for buggies is up the front and otherwise they’ll be in the way.

This. There are so many people at the bus stop that it's impossible to know who was there first and no one stands in a line, they just sort of huddle around aimlessly. So there's no queue to begin with.

Topsyturvy78 · 03/04/2025 22:50

Very few do this where I live. But we live in a small town where most know each other. Or if you don't know them personally you will know someone they know. Of course we let elderly & disabled ahead especially wheelchair users. My DS was in a wheelchair temporarily so I know it's easier to get on a bus before a load of people pack the front seats out.

MoonlightMemories · 03/04/2025 23:17

Im glad it's not just me that's noticed this - I don't go into town often but when I have been there and coming back, sometimes if I'm sat down on the shelter seats, people don't always check (if I haven't yet had a chance to stand up) if I'm wanting the oncoming bus and just go right ahead of me, or they go around the front of the bus shelter and just cut up EVERYBODY and go straight to the front of the queue.

I do suffer from conditions that can make prolonged standing in one place difficult and painful at times and that can also be tricky if you've then got bags of shopping you're carrying as well.

shellyleppard · 03/04/2025 23:26

This drives me absolutely mad!!! I que up patiently, the bus turns up and it's a free for all. I'm no longer polite, I just shove my way forward with the rest. I give way to elderly and people who struggle to stand/walk.....but anyone else can just wait. Very frustrating when I've been queuing up and everyone else just shoves on first grrr
