Flat battery

My car is booked in with my garage to check my dodgy battery next week - however now it's not starting at all so must be completely dead.
I'll call them tomorrow but I've not been in this situation before - how would I be expected to get my car to the garage? Will they ask me to use a breakdown service, or would they pick it up? Do AA etc help in this case even though the car is at my home address?
I can probably look this up but I'm feeling stressed and overwhelmed, lots of stuff going on all at the same time.
Hate it when cars don't work.

It depends on your policy as to whether the AA will come out or not, a lot of cheaper policies only cover a certain distance from home. Can you ask someone to jump start you?

InfoSecInTheCity · 13/03/2025 18:09

As above, easiest answer is get someone to give you a jump start and then follow you to the garage just in case. Other than that you'll need a tow or a breakdown service to jump start the car.

My RAC covers me from home so check your policy, lots do. Can someone jump it? Then you need to run it to allow it to fully charge. A new battery isn't always hugely expensive depending on your car...

Google 'new car battery' and it will bring up businesses in your area that will come to your home and fit a new battery for you. Some are more expensive than others so get a few quotes. Some local garages will also pop round and do it for you. I'd be wary of using breakdown services as their battery cost is usually ridiculously high.

Having said this, do you have a car with a really expensive battery?

I got a brand new one installed for about £50 a couple of years ago but I have an old Nissan Micra so parts are cheap.

Thank you all. Yes I could ask a neighbour to jump start it for me, but I have a feeling it might not work (although admittedly I have no clue about car batteries) as the garage tested it a couple of months ago and they said even though it wasn't 100% it should be fine as long as I give it a good run - which I did but it still wasn't great even though I use my car daily (I.e slower than it should be to turn on).
It's so stressful, I hate dealing with this stuff!

Do you park within cable distance of your house? If yes you could get yourself something like this to get it started yourself.Amazon link to mine
I have this and I can bump start myself within about 5 mins. I no longer feel that desperate what can I do horror!

Re the AA, you need to look at what Policy you bought.

I have home start with my car rescue company, but it is something you'd have had to pay extra for with AA or RAC I understand.

Re the garage - it depends. My garage would come out to me, but I've been a loyal customer there for 40 odd years, and recommended lots of new customers to go there. Lots of independent garages would do that, bigger dealerships not so likely.
But, if it is just the battery, then put a shout out to local friends to see who has jump leads.
