If you are employed and get paid PAYE do you still have to do tax return?

Depends on what you earn, whether you have other income or need to claim stuff back.

LIZS · 13/03/2025 17:38

You might if a higher rate tax payer and have other income or at request of hmrc

sepp · 13/03/2025 17:50

I don't have any other income. I did apply for self assessment but then started working PAYE so didn't think I needed to do anything but they've just sent me a letter saying they've fined me £100!

If you've registered for Self Assessment then you ate supposed to fill it in saying you owe nothing.

sepp · 13/03/2025 17:56

Argh I didn't know that! I'll have to appeal it and tell them what's happened.

Call HMRC and ask them to withdraw the notice to file a tax return. If they withdraw the notice you won't need to complete the return and the penalty will be cancelled

I’m PAYE and I’ve been doing an annual tax return for well over a decade. I started when the CB changes came in, and I’ve never been allowed to stop!

sepp · 13/03/2025 17:58

Thank you, I will do that.

you have to submit until hmrc tell you not to or you ring up and ask.
