Help! took ibuprofen yesterday and due to have operation tomorrow

I'm posting here for traffic. I took ibuprofen yesterday ( max daily dose for 1 day) as I thought I was developing a bit of a snotty nose. Ibuprofen usually works for me in these situations. Problem is your not meant to take this type of medication in the week before surgery. I promise I had read my leaflets but clean forgot about this. Will they cancel the operation? I'm in good health and take no other meds normally.

No idea about that and I am not a Doctor but I don't think that a full days dose of ibruprofen because you thought you were getting a snotty nose is a good idea.

It felt like it was tipping into sinusitis. I have to say it did the trick on that score. But not the best call it seems.

Are you having GI surgery?
Even if so, don't worry. They won't cancel.

No it's a hysterectomy. The vaginal hysterectomy procedure.

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm going to tell the anaesthetist. Do feel a fool though.

You need to tell your surgical team and they will assess the risk. I wouldn’t withhold that you have taken it, it puts you at risk of bleeding and your surgeon needs to know this.

I will do. I've checked why they list this drug.

Sorry poor English there. Say not to take it. Getting jittery and this has made it worse.

I had surgery this week and no one asked me if I'd taken any painkillers. Although thr answer would have been yes as I was in pain hence the need for the surgery!

I've had three general anaesthetics in the last year and none of them have told me to stop taking painkillers, only vitamins.

And my surgery this week was only agreed a week ago and I had no info at all about this one!

They won't cancel op. It's just overly cautious in those leaflets.

EmilieDuChatelet · 12/03/2025 22:19

Crikey - surprised that they didn't check with you in those circumstances.
I've read through everything and thought I'd got it all straight in my head. I don't have any regular medication, so that particular detail didn't register.
I hope your recovery is going well.

It will be fine don’t worry they won’t cancel but just let them know when you get to the hospital

MammaGx · 12/03/2025 22:40

Also if you are really worried you could call them in advance to put your mind at ease

ODFOx · 12/03/2025 22:43

In the run up to my hysterectomy I was taking max dose dichlofenac and paracetamol/codeine. I couldn't have gone 24 hours without pain relief.
As long as they know so they can adjust your anaesthesia dose if necessary it will be fine.

businessflop25 · 12/03/2025 22:52

I was on high dose naproxen until my hysterectomy two years ago. Nobody said anything about it and they were fully aware that I was taking it. Wouldn't have been able to function without it at that point

EmilieDuChatelet · 12/03/2025 22:53

Thank you for all for taking the time to post. It's put it in perspective for me. I'll let them know tomorrow when they come round to talk to me. I'm going to try to get some sleep.
