Hurt my ankle on holiday wwyd

I am in a very big EU city with my DC and I tripped over and have badly sprained my ankle. I am not letting my DC know quite how bad it is, but I heard a loud pop when I did it, it’s incredibly swollen and painful so I am prepared it’s a bad sprain that will take a while to heal.

I’ve been to a pharmacy and am treating it myself (RICE method) as best I can in a hotel. I don’t have long of my trip left so I can sort the longer term ankle situation out when I get home so I am trying to suck it up as unfortunate. I am insured but I do not want to ruin my DC’s trip by spending all day in a medical facility sorting out an ankle sprain, or not being able to get out and about anywhere on our last day. However I can’t walk very far. I don’t think going to get medical help will change that either, they are just going to tell me to rest it. Rock and hard place.

I have a metro card to get about. Any suggestions of how to enjoy a city break without being able to walk very much? 😞 Put it this way, until I hurt it we could easily walk more than 10 miles a day sightseeing, and we do not have the money left to get taxis everywhere. We have 8 hours between checking out of our hotel and our flight!

Flight was fine. My ankle is insanely itchy on the swelling which is driving me crazy. Still very hard to walk without a shoe on. My trainer gives support but unsupported it’s too hard to walk now. Am going to minor injuries in a bit

I'm glad you're home op, I bet you're relieved! I hope you don't wait too long in minor injuries, and you are fully recovered soon.

I have severe multiple ligaments damage/tears. Being referred for physio rehab. Don’t think it’s the tendon thankfully but they have said this kind of ligament damage can take months to heal.

It wasn’t an MRI so do not know the full extent of the ligament damage exactly but my ankle is not very stable across the top of the foot, they think the side one is torn and the top one is stretched so they tried with a splint - which didnt provide any of the support it needs, so pretty useless and the moon boot do not really help in the location it needs stabilising and press on the swelling and the ligament might just become stiff, which they want to avoid. We decided to try manage without a boot for now and focus on reducing swelling and keeping it mobile. They don’t recommend compression anymore but it was ok for the flight but I am not bothering with it now. Anyway I have been referred to the physio and will do the exercises and if physio thinks they need to do anything else they will recommend next steps. I can’t manage well barefoot so supportive shoes indoors for now. Going down stairs is also not great but I am keeping mobile

Unless there is a break, keeping off your ankle is only recommended for 2-3 days and movement is recommended so I haven’t made it worse by keep walking on it. I’m glad now I didn’t just give up as I do notice how stiff and horrible it is when I am still for too long

Its still hot and swollen but now it’s super itchy which is driving me crazy!

Oh @Ankleidiot - what a horrible injury for you. Hopefully the swelling and itching will reduce in next few days and good luck with the physio.
