Considering a move to Norwich

DH and I are considering a permanent move to Norwich, we’ve holidayed there a few times and really like it but living somewhere is different to visiting. It’s just me and DH- no kids - so nothing to consider about schools etc. Just wondered if anyone had done similar or could advise on pros/cons and nice areas to live. Thanks

I lived there for part of my childhood. Good theatre (may still be the case), seemed lots of cultural opportunities. Though by moving there we got far fewer visitors, even grandparents found it such that they only usually came for Christmas.

Things also to consider are the distance to an airport if you like foreign travel (local airport is limited for choice of departures), and depending on where you are moving from, daylight starts and ends earlier.

Norwich is lovely. To advise on where to live it would be helpful to know why you want to live there. Are you going there for access to the coast/countryside; cultural stuff; strong community; architectural attractiveness; cafes and pubs or something else…

Also what is your budget?

Imo the pros and cons are two sides of the same coin. It’s a bit out on a limb and transport connections aren’t great, however this is what makes it a friendly, slow-paced city.

Other pros and cons. Centre is compact and bike-friendly. You can commute to Cambridge and you can easily do day trips to London. Lots of history and a beautiful cathedral. Nice people, often quite arty and cosmopolitan. City centre also has some architectural horrors and is a bit scuzzier than it used to be. Property in the nice areas isn’t as cheap as it was.

Thanks for the replies. It would be going there for access to the countryside and coast - and cultural stuff whilst also enjoying a slower place of life. We wouldn’t necessarily want to live right in the centre of Norwich as have looked at property prices and they are higher in the centre, plus it’s busier there, but somewhere on the outskirts and within commuting distance of Norwich would be good. We don’t mind being out of Norwich in quieter areas as we both drive.

Our budget would be around 375k, our current house would sell for more than this but we’d like to keep some back from the sale.

We have visited Tombland and the Cathedral it’s lovely. The city has a really nice vibe. I am also considering going back to university as a mature student and the UEA appeals but not sure what it’s like.

I love Norwich and I have lived all over including London well Putney and Richmond so not sure if that is considered London anymore!

I would say though I don’t find it an easy drive. Not enough Mountains for me either. People are friendly. I always feel relaxed there and the weather seems sunnier and warmer.
