Need to get 15 year old's ankle x-rayed. There's a big children's a&e or a much closer adult a&e in our city. Which do i go to, please?
TIA

If the general A&E is closer I’d go there - it isn’t adults only and it isn’t the time of day for loads of drunks etc

Which ever has the shortest queue!

Nb. There an app called ‘WaitLess ’ where you can check hospital an and e waiting times.

It doesn’t matter. They’re not going to kick you out of ordinary A&E because you brought a teenager in and it’s not like a 15-year-old needs kids’ facilities.

Children's but if you have a minor injuries near you I'd go there first, I've always found they're more pleasant and the wait is shorter!

We were advised to call first rather than go to A&E they then book you in. Bit less hanging around waiting room and you will be told correct place to go. (Scotland so may vary from place to place).

The closest one. Travelling with a possible broken ankle isn't going to be very comfortable at the best of times, let alone before it's been put in plaster. I'm surprised you need to ask. Seems like the obvious choice to me.

WithASpider · 12/03/2025 13:38

While I'd usually say the closest one, Our closest A&E redirected us to the Children's when DD1 was 15 and had a suspected broken hand. If it was an emergency they'd have treated her. 16 is the cut off for Children's services round here.

It's probably worth calling your closest if you can, they should be able to advise better.

Thanks again, all. We went for the Children's in the end, and the wait was minimal. Appreciated the advice!
