Cambridge - where to go

Some girlfriends and I are spending a weekend in Cambridge in a couple of weeks. the last time I was out in Cambridge was 25 years ago when the place to go was PoNaNa!

I’m looking for recommendations for nice restaurants (need to cater to veggie and coeliacs) and bars where we can have nice drinks/ dinner, listen to good music but still be able to chat. In Cambridge city centre. not interested in clubs really.

does anyone have any recommendations?

thanks in advance 💐

I miss PoNaNa… those were the days

Oh, you are in for some surprises, Cambridge has changed a lot in the last 25 years!

Bill's in Cambridge is quite good, I know its a chain but they do a range of food, have music but not too loud so you can still chat.

If you want a bit more upmarket, the Garden House restaurant is very nice too and quieter for conversation.

There are lots of bars and cocktail places in town too eg Cambridge Brew House, The Lab.

For dinner at the weekend you would need to book as it gets pretty busy.

I know it's a chain but the branch of The Ivy is really nice.

There is The Permit Room, which is a Dishoom restaurant, for food/cocktails. Have heard good things about Kibou Japanese restaurant if that's your thing, has a cocktail bar downstairs I think. To be honest, most of the city centre places are chain restaurants - the more interesting independents are a little less central so depends what you want.

To avoid chains you want Mill Road. The Oak Bistro is also consistently good.

Given you have coeliacs, our choice for gluten free is always Brown's. Chain but good.

Coeliac is difficult.

Browns has a certified gluten free menu.

As far as I know lots of places offer gluten free this or that but browns is the only one that's certified and uses proper separation.

How coeliac are we talking?

The rooftop bar at the Varsity hotel has lovely views of Cambridge.

“How coeliac are we talking?”

tbh i put coeliac for ease rather than explaining the ins and out of her particular issue but generally places that have sufficient variety to cater for coeliac tend to work for her.

in any case i will get her to check out the menu to see that they will work for her
