Wearing glasses on a chain...

BigDahliaFan · 11/03/2025 11:05

I'm mid 50s and wondering about getting a chain for my reading glasses. I need them increasingly often and don't usually carry a handbag.

Anyone else do this?

No but I should as I'm constantly putting them down then muttering 'where the f are my glasses?'. In the winter I wear a fleece around the house which has a muff type pocket and I put them in there so I know where they are.

It is a pain when out and about shopping though as they are constantly on and off. I'm now thinking of getting a chain because I like to be different (think using a parasol in the park on a sunny day type of different).

I do this and have done since I started wearing glasses (aged 41 at that time). Very practical. I have different coloured strings to go with different outfits 😀

I am 41 and seriously thinking about buying some because I think they are cool, they will just be for wearing with sunnies! https://saltysafari.com.au/collections/sunglass-chain?srsltid=AfmBOornGy1zUdIoOTRPz6qiYGke6W41Ooog9Wxb2utNRVH6pTl1aWrm

I do this and have done since I started needing reading glasses last year, I'm 42 and was always losing them.

tipsyraven · 11/03/2025 13:35

I started using one after a pair I’d pushed up onto my head while I was doing something fell on the floor and frame broke.

Nourishinghandcream · 11/03/2025 13:43

When in a situation where I am constantly taking my reading glasses on & off, yes I do.

I only need glasses for reading so 95% of the time I don't need them.
When reading a book, doing a jigsaw etc then I put them on.
If I am flitting between reading, messaging someone etc then the cord comes out (I prefer the soft, fabric type) and I let my glasses dangle.

Yes, I do as I really can't cope without my reading glasses so it's great having them to hand all the time.

A friend has frames which snap together with magnets at the front so you can wear them round your neck. Now, I've been reminded, I'll have another look at getting a pair of those. Several different options on Amazon!

I did try a chain once, but went back to keeping them on my head when I don’t need them!

RandomMess · 11/03/2025 14:45

Get varifocals that are part non prescription and part reading.

Horrace · 11/03/2025 15:01

I want to do this too. Always thought it a tad old fashioned. Only person I could think of was Larry Grayson.
My husband thinks I'm camp as it is.
However, I was served by some young filly in Next the other day wearing very colourful beads. Said she got them from Etsy. She must have been all of 20.
So I think I will.
I'm mid 50s

CrepuscularCritter · 11/03/2025 16:11

I just fold mine up and hang them from my dress/top by one of the sides. Seems to work ok, and I've only lost one (cheap) pair in about 3 years.

StMarie4me · 11/03/2025 16:42

My 14 yo granddaughter loves her glasses chain!

BulbousSpring · 11/03/2025 16:45

I got a chain. After constant piss taking from my 4 teenagers, I stopped using it. I've got varifocals so am both short and long sighted so it wasn't that much use anyway. I have since bought DH a pair of reading glasses for every single room in the house, in order to spare him the ridicule of The Chain.

CarpetKnees · 11/03/2025 17:21

I've used one since my 40s.
Invaluable, and well worth the mocking from my brother.
So useful to always have your glasses to hand when you need them.

PassingStranger · 11/03/2025 17:24

No good, if you have two pairs to alternate all the time.

BigDahliaFan · 12/03/2025 08:09

Its ok I. The house as have cheap reading glasses everywhere. But just come back from holiday and needed them to read things in shops, guide book, change (couldn't tell coins apart) and was constantly ferreting around in my handbag for them. Maybe I'll start with a chain for holidays...

I have teased my DH for years about having a chain to keep his glasses on. He has about 7 pairs of reading glasses but of varying strength and can still never find any/the correct pair.
I'm short sighted so always know where my glasses are (usually on my nose!) but recently have found close work easier without glasses. I've resisted varifocals but have pondered about a chain (a beaded one) ...but I don't know if I can do it!
