Women's swimwear in France

We're going to a French Eurocamp in summer. I generally prefer to wear shorts type swimwear but I know France has rules about what you can and can't wear. If anyone is familiar with the rules in France could you please let me know whether any/all of these swim shorts would be ok? I'd be wearing them with a vest style tankini (no arms).

Also, I usually dress 5yo DD in a sunsuit with short arms and legs. Are they accepted, or does she need a standard swim suit?

Thanks!

I’ve only heard of rules for men at French pools - they have to wear ‘budgie-smugglers’ at most of them. Dh had to buy some!

Thanks! Yeah, it seems to be a bit less clear for women. I know that you can't wear loose shorts, and burkinis are banned (although I think that's a different law?) but I have no idea about tight swim shorts 🤷‍♀️

Those would be fine. Needs to be swimsuit material and tight. But you can wear rash vests etc

We go to a French eurocamp every year and see a mixture of bikinis, tankinis and swimsuits. My teen girls mostly wear bikinis. I'm a swimsuit. I've never seen or heard anyone or experienced rules for women's swimwear in the camp. Infact the shop onsite sells swimwear and has a mixture of items. It's never been a problem.
I've heard of French parks being a bit funny about men's swimwear but my husband and sons wear shorts (not budgie smugglers or longer boarding shorts) and we've not been asked to change.

French swimming pools are always concerned by the idea of men wearing ‘outdoor’ shorts into a pool and introducing dirt, hence the tight swimwear rule for men. Women they don’t seem so worried about, so I think those options would be fine.

I can’t think what kind of incident led to this rule:

Gerard had had a hard day at the plaster factory, so after a quick vin rouge decided to cool off at the piscine. Sadly he had not realised that his shorts were rock solid with plaster dust which, as he plunged into the cooling waters, formed a thick clump heading straight for the pool filter.

‘Zut alors!’ Pierre the lifeguard exclaimed, ‘We must ban these filthy shorts immediately!’

Having said that, the French swimming pools that I have used have always seemed nice and clean so they are probably doing something right.

They'll be fine, it's loose board short styles they don't like.

minnienono · 11/03/2025 10:55

They are fine, very similar to mens tight trunks which are allowed. It's the loose swim shorts that aren't allowed.

I've seen tight rash vests in France too

My children always wear sun suits in French pools. You can spot the brits - they are all in sun suits! French and Dutch kids are in bikinis or speedos 🤣

It seems to be municipal and some camp sites that follow the rules. We no longer go to our local pool in France as the boys don’t have any budgy smugglers. And don’t want to buy them! There’s another privately owned one which is fab (and cheaper) where we go sometimes with board shorts or there’s lakes or beaches.

definitely only a male issue so your DD will be fine.

itsgettingweird · 11/03/2025 11:15

Look at what decathlon sells in swimwear - that's usually a good indication of what the French wear!!!!

But yes it's loose shorts that are the issue.

Bleurghel · 11/03/2025 11:16

Ok great, so even the longer ones should be fine?
