Has anyone had their nose reset after breaking it?

I broke my nose a few days ago and went to A&E. There wasn’t much they could do for me but I got a referral to ENT to have it reset once the swelling goes down.

They phoned today with an appointment for next week. I asked if I’d be able to drive myself there, they said I would have a local anesthetic so could drive from that point of view, but said I might be in too much pain 😬.

Now I’ve had time to digest that phone call I’m kind of shitting myself. I thought I’d at least be sedated, but apparently not. I guess beggars can’t be choosers and I’ll be glad to have a normal-ish nose but wondered if anyone else has been through this and if it’s as horrendous as I’m imagining?

The closest I got was having my (previously broken) wonky nose straightened by a friend after breaking it again when I got kicked in the face at a concert. Fortunately, we were all extremely drunk.

This is probably not helpful to you at all. Just ask them to make sure you have appropriate pain relief. (Or drink half a bottle of rum.)

My son did, he was 14 at the time. They had to do it within 10 days of the break.
they did a general anaesthetic, it took a few minutes. We spent all afternoon waiting for it to wear off enough to leave the hospital.
id check they aren’t doing a general anaesthetic.

I did check yesterday as I was hoping to be knocked out or at least sedated but no it’s definitely a local anaesthetic! Maybe it varies from area to area, I guess local is the cheapest option.

I have had my nose reset and it was just a local anesthetic. Injected at various points around my nose. I will say no more as don't want to scare you. Good luck I hope it goes well

Oh good god 😬 I’ve a feeling this is going to be worse than actually breaking it in the first place.

Also wondering what the recovery time is like and how much pain I’ll be in afterwards? Just got quite a busy week next week and hoping it’s not going to affect me too much.

Under general as a 12 year old. I don’t want to scare you but I was very traumatised by it. The recovery took weeks. That and being talked over by my father and a consultant surgeon who probably hadn’t seen his own bollocks since before I was born telling me I’d care about it being pretty when I was older. (I had broken it playing football. I wasn’t that kind of girl then and never have been!)

Mine reset under local anaesthetic, it was fentanyl! They manipulated iit back into position, just really simple. Then got to lie down and was given tea and a sandwich. Went home and carried on as normal.

It us good to get it reset ASAP otherwise you may need it done under GA and I was advised that the result may not be as good.

It was all quite simple and painless, good luck!

Thank you, that’s positive to hear, fingers crossed it’s as simple for me.

I had this but it didn't work and then I ended up having to have the op anyway. I would make sure they have x rayed it again first before they try this and ask what the chances are of success. I think I would have opted for the operation if I had had a choice!

Good luck - hope it's ok. Don't be afraid to ask for more pain relief if it hurts at all.

Oh goodness poor you! Now the swelling is going down a bit mine doesn’t look tooooooo out of place, but it’s definitely not quite where I left it. But it’s very crunchy if I accidentally touch the top of it where the impact was.

How did you get on?

Thanks for thinking of me. Well I went to hospital and the doctor I saw had a bit of a feel of my nose and was like yeah there’s definitely a fracture on the left side. She said that she COULD try and reset it there and then with local anesthetic but I could tell she was heavily hinting that that would be a very bad idea. So I’m going in next week to have it done under a general, which I’m glad about.

Excellent - I think that sounds like a sensible decision. Good luck with the op!

Ineffable23 · 18/03/2025 06:29

That sounds better to me OP. Hopefully it goes okay next week!
