I’m 59 & have never tried lobster (I like crab so would probably enjoy lobster too).

Oysters!

Not exactly an everyday food but I’ve never fancied them.

Llllllllppppp · 10/03/2025 14:27

All fish apart from cod and haddock.
Cottage cheese
Gammon
Olives

There are lots of food I've never had because I became a vegetarian pretty young: lobster, prawns, caviar, scallops (except the potato ones you get from the chippy).

As for non-vegetarian stuff, I have never had peanut butter. I don't know why but just the thought of it seems slightly repellent.

Chuchoter · 10/03/2025 15:07

I'm a vegetarian but I've never eaten beetroot on its own. I've eaten it as a hidden ingredient but the sight and smell of it on its own is awful.

My mum is the undisputed champion of the world at this. She's 84 and hadn't, until last year when she came to stay with me for two months tried:

Mustard.
Horseradish sauce.
Meat with a cream sauce.
Veal.
Olives.
Courgettes.
Aubergines.
Raw onion.
Ratatouille.
Peanut butter.
Marmite.
Any cheese apart from cheddar.
Chicken livers.
Kebabs.
Chorizo sausage.
Dried apricots.
Harissa.
Nutella.
Ginger ale.
Pesto.

The list went on and on...
She was very game though and tried everything. The only real disasters were olives and moussaka. Ratatouille was fine as long as I peeled the vegetables. Unexpected triumphs were French cheeses like brie, merguez sausages and kebabs.
She really liked brie.
Nutella she took to straight away.

It was quite touching really, like a rôle reversal of me trying to get her to eat stuff when I was the, 'Picky Eater' forty years ago.

@Redheadedstepchild how lovely she got to try those foods.

I've not tried quite few things but can't remember what they are now. I know I wouldn't eat oysters or octopus or razor clams, I'm not hugely keen on shellfish but will eat scallops and prawns.

It was mustard, horseradish and marmite that surprised me the most. I mean, they don't fall into the, 'foreign muck' category, do they? She's bonkers for marmite now.

NotCamping · 10/03/2025 18:49

Nachos. They’ve never appealed to me.

minnienono · 10/03/2025 18:51

There's very few foods widely available in the U.K. I haven't tried, I can't think of anything but I have refused weird foods abroad (sheep testicule stew anyone???)

RaininSummer · 10/03/2025 18:57

Prawns, oysters, all shellfish, octopus and squid . Just cannot go there.

MagicalMystical · 10/03/2025 19:02

Never had the opportunity to eat lobster or oysters but would like to try.

Few things from @Redheadedstepchild’s list haven’t been on my radar so I haven’t had them either (eg chicken livers, veal).

My only use for beetroot is in, 'Barbie coleslaw.' You can buy a mix of ready grated or chopped veg with a bit of raw beetroot in with the carrot and cabbage and when you leave it to mix in with the mayonnaise/crème fraîche/whatever mixture in the fridge it turns pink.

I'd like to think that I invented this, but I didn't. Still, you can't copyright a recipe so...

Fresh figs! That was another thing my mum had never tried, despite having a fig tree in our garden when we lived on the Isle of Wight.

"What did you do with them, then?"
"Nothing really. Your father wouldn't touch them and they were really difficult for jam. They're a different sort of figs over here. Ours were wizened before we even started on our old tree."

I have only had them cooked not raw. One day in Bruges I had a choice. Raw oysters for the equivalent of one pound or a Guiness. I went for a Guiness cos I knew I liked it!!

Deathraystare · 11/03/2025 07:41

I have not had tripe. Nor will I. Only dad liked it. Was never offered it.
