Anyone suffer from aura migraine? How do they leave you feeling afterwards?

Even though I have experienced these for 20 years they still never fail to terrify the hell out of me.

I got my first migraine with aura during my pregnancies then at the beginning of each period. I am now in perimenopause and they come randomly, so must be a hormonal trigger for me.

I hate them with a passion. Starts off as a blind spot in my vision which becomes a weird flashing zig zag which lasts half an hour or so. I often have no choice but to go and lie down in the dark.

I often don't get much of a headache after but they leave me feeling really weird, anxious, spaced out and so so tired. Sometimes I will very confused too.

I woke with one this morning and now feel so weird, 3 hours on. So tired and spaced out.

Does anyone else get this? After all these years I don't think there is anything I can do to prevent them happening (my mum always suffered from them and so does my sister).

I am getting them everyday at the moment. Been going on for two weeks. Also with terrible tinnitus and facial twitching on one side.

Bloody awful.

You have my sympathy

I get awful tinnitus and it's always much worse during and after and aura attack.
Sorry you are struggling with them atm that must be tough going.

Completely visual, don’t normally get head pain, completely wiped by the end of it. None since going gluten free (GP recommended for a series of other symptoms; this was an unexpected benefit)

I've just started going gf and an anti inflammatory diet as I have endometriosis and awful digestive issues. It'll be interesting to see if it improves the auras.

Mine start as a little yellow light that grows, turns to black and white zigzags with a bit of red and yellow in there, before settling into a nice, large zigzag patterned C shape, impeding my vision so I can't read for a bit. Generally only there for around twenty minutes.

Yes, mine start with a dazzling spot that shimmers then goes black and white then scintillates with fabulous colours.

in a curve.. Visible with closed eyes as well.

LSD was discovered by a scientist wanting to find a cure for migraines which is fascinating, as the visuals are very similar.

I think this happens to me. I had a stressful day on Friday so maybe that's why?
I also have IBS and find I'll have a big flare up a few days after a stressful time yet can be fine during.

I've got IBS too and they really affect my stomach too. A few people on this thread have mentioned having IBS I think - I wonder if there's any link.
Yes like you mine definitely happen when I finally relax, I can almost guarantee it's going to happen

Hi @Ahsheeit may I ask which ADHD medications you are on? One of my DCs suffers from intermittent migraines. They started before the ADHD diagnosis. I think they are very linked to stress and exhaustion but DC switched from methylphenidate to Elvanse and it would be interesting to see if there is a link (seems to be more inclined to migraines now - but not sure if it's school stress or different meds...?)

We have found 400mg daily of B2 (riboflavin) helpful for reducing frequency - DC started taking that some time ago before ADHD diagnosis.

It'll be interesting to hear back from you both in the future whether the dietary changes help. I haven't tried any exclusionary diets but it might be worth a try.

Sorry to divert away from your original question OP, not sure how qualified I am to describe the aftermath on DCs behalf. After the Aura and the pain and light sensitivity DC seems to sleep the sleep of the dead for several hours, then on waking up spends about an hour being groggy, dreamlike and spaced out is back to normal.

Yes if you just look at it from a visual point of view the colours and shapes are amazing! I wonder what came of the scientists research. Very interesting.

The Aura is a Godsend as it enables prophylactic drugs to be taken.

If one misses the aura ( if asleep) waking up with a sick migraine is GRIM, and no pills work.

Sleep is definitely the best thing for migraines if you can get it. I'm sorry your DC suffers with them

What is an anti-inflammatory diet if you don’t mind me asking?

I believe this is known as a silent migraine (rather than an aura migraine) where you experience an aura but without the subsequent headache.

Interesting. If I still get the red/green/blue triangular flashing lights creeping across and lose the middle bit of my vision, would that still be considered a 'silent migraine ' because there's no pain?

waltzingparrot · 12/03/2025 10:30

@HundredMilesAnHour Ignore my last question - that is exactly what you said in your post. Sorry 🤦‍♀️

Really interesting thread.
I’ve had them occasionally over the last 10 years, always coinciding with some form of high stress or being over tired.

However last week I had one completely out of the blue, early morning, feeling good. That’s a first.

Make me feel very tired for about 2 days, dull headaches and tired eyes. This last one cause an increase in my tinnitus levels. I’ve had tinnitus for years which is always worse with stress and being over tired, but this is the first time without stress so I am connecting with the aura. Unless I’m stressed and don’t realise it …

This is amazing, so many symptoms I’ve been trying to describe for years! The zig zags, the blind spot, the kaleidoscope, and the migraine hangover! Sorry to hear others are suffering, but so reassuring it’s not just me. Does anyone else get migraines when the weather is bad? I’ve had some of my worst when the pressure changes

Yes! Stormy weather is one of my biggest triggers. My migraine aura arrives slightly before the high pressure, so I'm a human weather station!

I get hormonal migraine with aura, following an attack i get a kind of hungover feeling for a day or so.

Botox has been magical for me, it stops any kind of headache, no migraines, no wine head, no dehydration headaches.

ChampagneSuperNova00 · 01/06/2025 11:30

This might sound silly, but do you find you feel better (or worse) depending where you sit in a room?

For example, do you feel worse if sit facing the light or sunny window compared to with your back to it or the other way round.

I only ask because I feel weird if I sit with my back to the light or sun, or if there’s loads of noise behind me. I feel better if I’m facing the light as long as it’s not in my eyes.

If nothing else, it's comforting to know auras are so common.

I suffered with horrendous migraines (no auras) all my adult life, hormone related, one a month.
Gradually as I aged, they decreased, and now I (touch wood) I don't have migraines.
I do now get auras, they started around 10 years ago. There is no indication one is coming, they just arrive. A small zigzag increases to a large one, usually on the right side of my vision. I have to close my eyes, and just wait for it to pass...usually no longer than 30 minutes.
I also feel disorientated for an hour or so afterwards.
