My child starts secondary in sept, already looking at uniform costs . A shirt is £22 realistically do I need 5 ?
They have to wear them every day and change into pe kit at school

Same with kilts they are £44 each
And trousers are £18 each

6 shirts each. All 10 from the week on the line drying right now. They need a clean one each day as they get older - just like I wouldn't rewear a top after a full day at work. BUT we are on supermarket shirts!
3 trousers. 2 sets of pe kit. One spare blazer - slightly too small for DS2, slightly too big for DS2! Spare tie each.
We have lost a lot less stuff at secondary than primary.

thismummydrinksgin · 08/03/2025 11:44

I have 4 and do a mid week wash, mainly because they come in packs of 4!

Sinkintotheswamp · 08/03/2025 11:46

You need 5 shirts. But 6 is better if in packs of two.
And two ties makes life much less stressful.

I'd hold off on the second tie, I dutifully bought DS two ties and he never once lost one so it was a complete waste of money. If a tie gets lost there's generally a grace period in which you can buy a new one.

Both of my kids had 3 each at secondary and I washed them mid week so they has a clean one each day.

Sirzy · 08/03/2025 12:02

I have 5 shirts so I can just done one white wash at the weekend.

but ds goes to a sensible school who don’t have overpriced uniform

ShodAndShadySenators · 08/03/2025 12:06

£22 is a ludicrous amount for a school shirt that is going to be outgrown. I don't see how school can insist on that? My kid went his entire school career in M&S shirts and they didn't cost anything like that - I bought multipacks so there was a spare just in case (and a pristine one for photo day, although that only happened in Y7 and never again). So we had six shirts in stock in his wardrobe plus four pairs of trousers. Some kids grow like weeds though so uniform should never be that expensive, let alone replacing items that get lost/stolen

roselilylavender · 08/03/2025 12:35

I was going to say 6 but we get them in Asda! Perhaps 3. Then you can do a mid week wash. And, if they lose one, they still have another one for the next day.
Do factor in whether you actually have time to do a mid week wash and have it dry for then next morning. We started off with one set of PE kit but washing it several times a week became such a hassle that I got a second set.

Is this a private school? State school uniforms shouldn’t be that expensive and should allow you to substitute official school brand items such as shirts for generic ones. You can get shirts very cheaply in Asda, Tesco, M&S etc which most schools are more than happy for kids to wear.

if you’re happy to do a mid week wash you could get away with 3 shirts. But realistically you do need one every day.

Edited

No it's not private its classed an academy of that makes a difference

£22 is crazy. Are they branded?

Our school shirts are pricey from the official supplier. But the Asda or M&S shirts are the same and much cheaper. Could you find equivalent shirt?

Or does your school have a second hand uniform shop?

There a certain colour of green. I've heard there is a pre loved shop

Yes it does. Labour are pushing through a schools bill that will limit state schools to 3 branded items of school uniform, 4 if includes a tie.

It would be better to have a maximum price.
Blazers at DDs school are £27. At DNs school, they are £70. How can one be over twice the price of another and still insist its "necessary".

user2848502016 · 08/03/2025 13:02

My DD does have 5 shirts and 2 jumpers. She can only wear a shirt one day or they get too stinky (thanks teen hormones!), so unless you want to do a mid-week wash I would get 5.

Comedycook · 08/03/2025 13:07

You need a clean shirt every day in secondary...so it depends on how often you do washing. Jumpers and skirts/trousers can go for slightly longer

Pedallleur · 08/03/2025 13:08
  1. 1 clean one per day and a spare.
Spirallingdownwards · 08/03/2025 13:13

At least 5. Welcome to sweaty teen years.

Definitely hit the preloved shop or ask on local FB pages if anyone is selling any

redcherrie · 08/03/2025 13:15

When my son started his indi senior I bought all new- cost was over a grand. I wish I didn't do that!! I now get all shirts etc from the second hand shop. He comes home filthy most days, paint/ink on his clothes!

PurpleThistle7 · 08/03/2025 13:15

I have 5 sets but we have the best ever uniform policy - black leggings and t shirts with a black hoodie. They all look like thieves (or mimes!) but it's super easy. Got everything at H&M and wash a load of it each weekend.

RaspberryRipple2 · 08/03/2025 13:21

We’re halfway through year 7 and have bought 15 so far! First lot were grown out of, then needed short sleeves for summer. But to be honest they don’t last with sweat/deodorant stains and are £13.50 for 5 in Asda so I think it’ll be 2 packs per school year. we have 2 blazers, 2 skirts, 2 ties one PE kit - all of that is branded except the shirts.

The 2 pack is why DS has 4. They have distinct shirts just in Y11 so I don't want to buy more than needed, I wash midweeek and at weekends so he always has a couple ready to go

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/03/2025 13:37

Depends on the child.

one of mine needs a clean one every day.

the other manages with 2 per week.

minnienono · 08/03/2025 13:42

I had 3 per child and washed lights twice a week. 2 skirts each. But at least I could buy uniforms anywhere, you just bought the tie and the blazer badge for £4 each from the school. Charging more for skirts than trousers is sec discrimination in a mixed sex school

ManchesterLu · 08/03/2025 13:44

Definitely get 5 so that if they need one a day, they can have one, and do all the washing at the weekend. Honestly, it's not worth trying to save the money if it's just going to mean emergency washing mid week. It'll just get annoying.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 08/03/2025 13:45

Ours are a particular colour and can only be bought from the supplier. They are £22 for a pack of two. Are you sure your shirts are £22 each?

I bought 2 packs initially, so 4 shirts and did a quick wash mid-week. Bought another pack the following year. Child is still wearing uniform purchased in Year 7 (now Year 9). It was expensive, but has lasted really well and still looks smart. I know people complain about how expensive uniforms are, but ours are really good quality and good value when you consider the amount of wear. I would rather save up and fork out for an expensive kilt once rather than buy a succession of cheap skirts that don't look as smart.

Phineyj · 08/03/2025 13:46

5 unless you want to do a mid week wash.
