Sick DH anyone up?

Carrie76 · 08/03/2025 02:37

DH is one of those people who’s never ill. He brought ds to watch a match this evening and came back feeling poorly. He is shivering, has aches and pains a headache and weirdly a pain in his rectum. I gave him neurofen around 11, any ideas what it could be or what I can give him?

He’s now vomiting

Is he asleep now?

CharSiu · 08/03/2025 02:49

I would say this is the sort of time ringing the NHS health helpline is worth it.

Norovirus? Dehydration solution in small sips if he can face it, and wait for it to pass.

MikeRafone · 08/03/2025 02:59

it could be a sickness bug or something he ate

CalicoPusscat · 08/03/2025 03:00

I'd wrap him up warm, get him some hot fluids and play it by ear

Carrie76 · 08/03/2025 03:01

Could be norovirus or food poisoning though we all had the same dinner and everyone else is fine. The pain in his bottom is what’s throwing me not a usual symptom I don’t think

I can’t believe the advice on this thread. Don’t wrap him up if he’s shivering - he’s clearly got a temperature! Wrapping him up will only make him worse. Have you got paracetamol you can give him on top of the neurofen? Keep him hydrated but I’m afraid he just needs to ride it out. Keep your distance and on top of your own hand washing if you can or you’ll be next!

Carrie76 · 08/03/2025 03:15

No paracetamol unfortunately, I have calpol!

It sounds like one of the many bugs going around. Hydrate, rest and he will soon be better, I wouldn’t be sleeping next to someone with a sickness bug op. Its so infectious,

The rectal pain is worrying. He needs to see a doctor. It is rare but rectal abscess needs to be excluded.

I am sure he would have been in pain before now if he had an abscess. Some D&V can create pain in stomach and bottom area for obvious reasons.

Diarrhoea wasn't mentoned. I would expect diarrhoea to cause anal soreness but rectal pain is different. It is an odd symptom.

endofthelinefinally · 08/03/2025 04:07

OP says DH is never ill. He may be quite stoic/ have a high pain threshold. Those are often the people who do need to see a doctor if they seem very unwell.

His symptoms sound unusual, but the sudden onset high temperature with rectal pain that has brought on vomiting rings alarm bells and I think should consider seeking medical advice. Does he have pain anywhere else? If you press his abdomen is it painful?

Carrie76 · 08/03/2025 08:12

Thanks for all the replies, he got a few hours sleep he’s just been vomiting again. No pain when I press his abdomen. He hasn’t had a temperature at any stage.

He still has a bad headache and the pain in his rectum. He hasn’t had any diarrhoea, does that rule out food poisoning?

Doesn't rule anything out but gastroenteritis can cause the combination of symptoms you've described - everything connected with the digestive system ends up inflamed and it can be felt as pain in various parts of the stomach, bowel, or rectum. Keep an eye on him, try and track how much liquid he's able to keep down/in, if you can give him electrolytes (either diluted sports drinks like lucozade, clear broth, or rehydration sachets from a pharmacist) that'll help. Look up signs of dehydration and keep an eye out for those as well.

And yes to hand washing and wiping down anything he touches - whatever it is, you don't want it.

cabbagefordinner · 08/03/2025 11:03

I had this a number of years ago- shivering, feeling like I had flu and also, a weird rectal pain. Turned out I had sepsis from an infection in my gallbladder. I had no abdominal pain and had never had any gallbladder issues, so it really was totally random. Definitely don't hang about if you think he's getting worse.

Not having diarrhoea definitely doesn't rule out food poisoning- it can all come out as vomiting.

Did he eat anything at the match he went to?

Carrie76 · 08/03/2025 13:05

He hasn’t eaten since dinner last night. Shivering seems to have stopped he still has a headache but hasn’t vomited since 8. Hopefully he’s through the worst of it

Hopefully it was just a funny 5 minutes, so to speak.

Do you have Saturday medical care where you are?
