Getting smells out of clothing

Dueanamechange2025 · 07/03/2025 18:06

I bought a suit jacket off Vinted. It was new with tags but when it arrived it had a foisty / musty smell.

I wanted to keep the jacket so took the tags off and washed it as 40 as per the instructions. The smell has got less but definitely still there!

Any tips to make it wearable? I bought some Bicarbonate of Soda but not really sure what to do with it.

Put the jacket in a big bag (bin bag?) and put the open tub of bicarb in. Seal the bag and leave it as long as you possibly can. A few drops of a nice smelling essential oil in the bicarb might help to leave it smelling nice also.

If it's machine washable then you can soak it in warm water with bicarbonate and vinegar. This is what we do with vintage clothing in this house as those vintage kilo sales can be really musty and blurgh.

Then wash as usual and if possible hang outside for a day!

Would you lay it in the bath soaking maybe? Trying to keep its shape!

I always soak but depends on the fabric I suppose. We usually get T-shirts sweatshirts and jeans so not too worried about shape.

It’s soaking in white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, wish me luck!

Definitely hang it outside afterwards if you can

So long as it's not made from wool you can use loads of bio detergent. The enzymes work wonders on smells. Or add lots of vanish to a non bio wash to make it bio rather than buying a different detergent if you usually use non bio.

Detmold laundry additive works wonders and kills smells or sprinkle it with bicarb and then wash.

How long do you soak for?

Ages but that's because I usually forget about it! Definitely 1 hour minimum!

Also agree with the biological detergent.
