Chicken pox 3 times?!

Has anyone had chicken pox 3 times? I had it twice as a child and I've developed what looks like chicken pox blisters on my legs and abdomen. They are quite widely spread, not along a nerve or anything to suggest shingles.
I spoke to the head of immunology I worked with a long time ago when he was training me in vaccinations and he said you can get the pox twice although rare. It definitely was the pox twice too. But 3 times?! I'm seeing the GP later.

I've been feeling off for about a week with chills at times but nothing to stop me going about my day to day stuff.

Could be stress maybe.

I haven't taken a photo because I was in a hurry to get dc to school and now can't.

I know kids who have had it twice, not thrice. Have you told the GP you suspect CP, you should be isolated at the surgery?

Darkclothes · 07/03/2025 10:45

Some people are non responders! Its rare but can happen. I've mainly heard of it in relation to vaccines, where people don't build up the immunity. There is a chicken pox (varicella) vaccine, but if you aren't building antibodies from the actual disease, I doubt you would from the vaccine. Something to discuss with your GP though.

They can do titre levels to check your immunity, but unless you work in healthcare or certain professions, it likely wouldn't be covered on the NHS.

I've seen the GP and he's not sure except for definitely a virus and time will tell. More spots have appeared since I posted and the biggest spot has got bigger.

I'm a carer for my mum and used to work in the NHS but chicken pox status was never asked about. All 3 dc had it at various points tA over the space of about 7 years but I didn't catch it

I apparently had it 4 times, confirmed by paediatrician the last 3 times. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The final time was really bad, I was probably about 10. I haven’t had it as an adult so that must have finally built up some immunity. It does happen.

LegoTherapy · 07/03/2025 16:58

If any of the dc were presenting with these spots I'd have no doubt it was CP. I feel better than I did this morning but no energy and my legs really ache. Luke period legs but no periods.
I've been battling a rosacea flare up for the past 2 months too just to add to the delights

I've had it 3 times. The first as a child, covered in spots. The other two times I was an adult and had much less by way of spots but both times a doctor diagnosed chicken pox.

Crunchymum · 07/03/2025 17:18

My DC2 has apparently had it 3 times.

First time I took her to GP with a rash and they actually diagnosed CP? I still don't think it was though.

A few years later same child got a very mild case of CP, DC1 then got it proper and a month later DC2 finally got a full dose of CP - that was a fun summer!!

Sometimes hand foot and mouth can be confused with chicken pox. It can look really similar and you feel rough with it. My dr said if there are no (or only a few) on belly/ back the. Chances are it’s hand foot and mouth. Can be hard to tell the difference

Zuve · 07/03/2025 17:37

I had this several times. I took selfies of the areas affected. It popped up when the immune system was down. I can vaccine in the end. Perfect never had it again. It's horrible

LegoTherapy · 07/03/2025 17:57

It's not a great photo but it's a definite blister on the spots.

Can they take a culture? I had a friend who thought (for years) that she was having recurring shingles outbreaks (skin on outer thigh running down her leg). Finally had it cultured and turned out to be HSV2. Antiviral meds have suppressed the outbreaks.

MajorCarolDanvers · 07/03/2025 18:19

Both of my nieces have had it 4 times each

AFLifeForLife · 07/03/2025 18:21

DS1 has had it twice- very mild. My mother has had it twice- the second time in her late 60s and she was incredibly ill. Not shingles- CP.

I've apparently never had it. I assume i have- just so mild it never crossed my radar.

Hope you feel better soon OP. Thanks

The biggest one has now scanned over. Nothing is any bigger than yesterday and I haven't found anymore since last night. Weird.
