Does the vastness/ science of the universe scare you?

Black holes, comets, galaxies... it all makes my lil head hurt! The vastness of everything surrounding us is terrifying though!

At the same time, I love it! I want to know as much as my limits will allow me.

Does anyone understand how it all works? Or how a lay person can start to understand it?

What is even more boggling is the certainty that our current understanding is likely to be very flawed, but we can’t hope to know in what way. People were very certain that the sun went round the earth for a very long time, and that seemed very reasonable! I increasingly see logic in the argument that the more we start to understand the potential of AI, the more likely it becomes that we are actually living in a simulation. Maybe a vast global one, maybe one where it’s only your consciousness and the rest is all manufactured. Ultimately it doesn’t really matter, we have no control over it and no choice but to keep living as if it’s all real, but it’s definitely unsettling.

@Wibbley97 i read recently that it's possible that we are indeed inside a simulation, which is inside another simulation, which is .... so on and on and on.

At this point it's probably best for us all to just get on with our breakfast and not worry 😂😂

Maybe we are all just living inside the matrix.....

I find it mind-alteringly fascinating. I’ve been to see Brian Cox a few times, and he is a brilliant communicator. (I’m also a big Monkey Cage fan).

I also love the evidence based approach to things - if the evidence changes it is ok to change your mind. We should apply that much more widely to life.

Ha! Maybe we should start a support group for this! Grin

Quite the contrary, I find it extremely comforting because it's so right. Our ignorance of this is the greatest equalizer, which really helps put Musk and Trump into perspective.

It doesn't scare me but I often wonder if life is just a fluke and was never meant to be. And if that is the case then it saddens me to think that there could be this vast, incredible universe and no-one would ever know.

I find it kind of reassuring. To think of how minuscule all our stresses and worries are in the grand scheme of things.

Same here. It's all interesting, but I don't really have time to think about it that much!

I was very frightened about it all one bedtime when I was seventeen.
