Handed in my notice - getting wobbly help!

I was considering other roles as I am very underpaid for my industry - got offered one yaaay! The package is approx. double (more in line with industry) plus company shares.

My work are gutted for me to leave and now I feel guilty/worried I'm doing the wrong thing! I'm quite an anxious person and now I worry I've done the wrong thing (I do like my colleagues and job!) but I know they didn't value me as much as they should have before being faced with me leaving - please give me some tough love and remind me not to get sucked back in! I shouldn't stay right??

I would be skipping out of there OP for double my salary, no matter how much I loved it there!

gottagetit · 06/03/2025 15:53

@Tafal this is what i need to remember!! financially such a big thing

Come on now OP, I bet your work were gutted, if they were getting somebody who is worth double, for half!

Onwards and upwards!

MimiSunshine · 06/03/2025 15:55

They could very easily have said ‘so sorry we had no idea we were so badly behind the market (🤨), here is written confirmation that as of x date your salary and package will match your other offer, please stay’

they haven’t, they just want you to stay so they have cheap labour and are happy to guilt you. You can stay in touch with your colleagues

Yes @3packs - completely agree!

thequeenoftarts · 06/03/2025 16:07

Tell them to use the term gutted to express a realistic offer to you so. Put their money where their mouths are.

melonalone · 06/03/2025 16:11

Don’t burn any bridges - make clear you loved your time there but the salary simply wasn’t enough. If the other job doesn’t work out for any reason, you want to be able to come back (but definitely for more money!)

You’re doing the right thing, OP. Their disappointment is a reflection of how good you are at your job, but your salary is a reflection of how much they actually value you. Good luck in your new role, it sounds like they are lucky to have you!

Too late to do that, they clearly didnt value OP and would stiff her on the next pay review with a "you've already had a payrise / you're already paid more than everyone else" type bollocks

If they didnt offer before, then why would you want to stay with a company that didnt value you to pay what you were worth before you threatened to leave?

gottagetit · 06/03/2025 16:47

They are considering a counter. But I don’t think they can match it and as PPs said it shouldn’t take this to feel valued!

a shame - I’d have loved for it to work

DPotter · 06/03/2025 16:53

Well done you !!

Don't feel bad AT ALL! These people would know your worth and have been deliberately paying you below the going rate for years. And quite rightly you're voting with your feet. And now they can't afford you - that's brilliant! You know them nothing. You've given them loyal service and not been recompensed according to industry standard - they don't deserve you.

Hope you have just a month's notice to work. Don't whatever you do agree to work a minute longer than your contractual notice.

I’m in a similar position OP but haven’t been offered a new role yet, though have applied for one which is around £20k more than I’m currently on, it’s the exact same role is the same location so the salary difference is staggering.

i love my role & colleagues but someone put it beautifully above, your salary is a reflection of your worth to them.

Good luck, you’ll be ace!

@Stairsdown yes - many times. When I first joined, and multiple times since then. I was recently given extra responsibility with no extra pay too.

Always 'leave well' and don't burn your bridges as stated above, but remember that actions speak louder than words and whilst they're telling you you're valued, your pay says otherwise.
Things happen for a reason and I'm sure you won't look back.

MuggleMe · 07/03/2025 08:10

Even if they counter, they clearly won't continue to give you raises like the other place will.

I think it’s a mixed bag, depending on when they joined etc but I think I’m certainly the most underpaid in my area of the business.

yes because I get on well with my colleagues and enjoy my job
