St Martins Cafe in the Crypt

Hi,
I am taking an elderly friend into town and she's fretting about the cost of eating there.

I thought this might be a good place to go, but I can't find any prices online. Does anyone know how much it would be to have a main course please? She'll probably want hot food.

Will it be mad busy on a Saturday? She walks with a stick, but I can obviously go up and get food for her.

Thanks

Which town is this?

It's in Trafalgar Square in London.

Miranda1723 · 05/03/2025 20:45

Sandwiches are £9, pizzas £12, jacket potato £10, and there looks to be some hot food dishes in the £mid teens. Look in the photos of Google reviews - these are prices from the last 12 months.

Huckleberries · 05/03/2025 20:51

@Miranda1723 ah thanks. I reckon I can find somewhere nicer in the same range

Thanks, everyone

Sorry, I knew I missed the word London out of my post but I realised too late to edit it

It's lovely in there and the prices are very reasonable.
Also there is a large central lift down as well as stairs.
It does get busy though so be prepared to wait for a table.
You can get fish and chips or a meat dish as mains and there's usually something like apple crumble and custard.
Haven't been since last summer but it was under £20 for fish and chips. apple crumble and a pot of tea.
It's my go to place to eat in central London.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 05/03/2025 20:53

It is well worth a visit. I love it there.

MissFancyDay · 05/03/2025 20:56

It's nice there. We always go if we are visiting the National Gallery.

CoffeeWithHer · 05/03/2025 21:03

Many places to eat around the area so you’ll find other places to go but this is such a unique place I hope you do go.

Sometimes they have a mini art gallery as you go in showcasing different things.

Used to pop in when I was heavily pregnant with DD - it’s a gorgeous space and the food is good.

(side note - I went to a silent disco in here with my DD last year…she is now 18 and I just couldn’t believe I used to be there with my swollen everything and now I’m here dancing to cheese pop with her!)

Some of the proceeds go to their homeless charity.

DappledThings · 05/03/2025 22:18

It's not a huge range of food but it's nicely done. Will be rammed on a Saturday but turnover of tables is high and the queue moves quickly.

People say they're going in to town to mean London

Only people who live near London. Where I live, going into town just means the local town. So you can see why it's confusing.

Bananalanacake · 05/03/2025 22:39

Does anyone remember before they refurbished it? There was a lovely set of arty market stalls in the street right next to it, since they put in the lift and that hole where you look down it's gone.

I’d be surprised, tbh. The surroundings in the crypt are fabulous, like nowhere else, and the food is good value.

You'd be hard pushed to find somewhere nicer, it's lovely inside, there's outside space too and an art gallery, they also hold music recitals, look it all up online. Cheap and cheerful places can be found nearby in Chinatown or soho.

Dearover · 06/03/2025 15:36

I went for lunch before a trip to the theatre. Lovely building but the jacket potato with tuna mayo I had cost around £15 with a drink & was a complete rip off & poorly cooked. There are many other places nearby with nicer food.

LocalHobo · 06/03/2025 15:40

I think the Cafe in the Crypt will be your best bet cost/surroundings wise. I was going to suggest Larry's in the National Portrait Gallery but, I've just checked, and their cheapest main, a club sandwich, is £16.50 and fish pie is £21.50. Otherwise it will have to be a chain restaurant.

lap90 · 06/03/2025 15:48

I've never eaten there (only pop in to use their toilets) and have always found it busy.

Bellaphant · 06/03/2025 16:56

It's lovely and reasonable, for real food
