Alternatives to flowers for Mother's Day

Does anyone have any ideas for alternative gifts to flowers for MIL for Mother's Day? She's almost impossible to buy for at the best of times, and I'll be heavily pregnant or have a newborn baby on Mother's Day - so sending flowers would be perfect, except we already sent flowers for her January birthday and repeating feels very boring. She's at a point where she has a few hobbies she loves, which she doesn't need anything else for, and most consumable or experience gifts don't work for her.

  • if relevant, she's in her sixties
  • she lives 4 hours away so joint experiences aren't practical, especially with the baby
  • she doesn't drink alcohol and has frequently changing dietary requirements, so food and drink gifts are out, and cooking is a chore for her, so no kitchen related gifts. We've had some success with tea and coffee gifts before
  • she likes knitting and sewing, but already has everything she needs and more besides for those
  • she loves her garden, but again is sorted equipment wise and if anything she's trying to declutter there. A plant for the garden was the only thought I had
  • she doesn't like anything scented for around the home or candles etc. Toiletries are hit or miss
  • she doesn't visit cafes or coffee shops so a local voucher is also out
  • she struggles with focus so doesn't read books and has no interest in any stationery items
  • she has no interest in jewellery or fashion

I'm fully aware that this is DH's responsibility and he always has and will sort it, but just posting after a conversation with him where he asked if I had any inspiration and I didn't, I thought I'd crowdsource responses.

From someone who loves their garden, a garden centre gift token! You sound lovely x

What about something like Turtle doves those soft cashmere wrist and hand warmers. They are lovely and my my MIL wears hers all the time.

What about buying her an experience day related to this, like dying her own yarn? Or needle felting?

Sounds like coffee, tea, or a plant for the garden would be fine.

Or just have your H engage his brain.

Voucher for photobox or similar to get a canvas printed with her favourite picture of the new baby or a nice family photo on?

Eta - I'll also likely have a very new baby or be heavily pregnant, so I've ordered her vouchers and sent them to her already, with a heads up (she'd requested them when I asked what she wanted so not spoiling a surprise or anything). Wanted to be sure I got her gift to her ready as don't want to forget if I'm sleeping deprived/any complications etc

On the national gardening centre website you can send direct to recipient

Eta as the edit function seems to have gone!

My replies were based on my own mum but saw your MIL likes her garden hence suggestion of vouchers

Voucher for garden centre (you can get vouchers that can be spent at lots of garden centres).

Gardening gloves - you can never have enough...

mdinbc · 05/03/2025 20:58

If she has anywhere for a hanging basket then that is both flowers, and a gift for her garden. We did one for MIL when she was still alive and she always enjoyed them.

  • A charity donation relevant to the Mothers' Day theme
  • A mug from a ceramicist local to you
  • A pair of lined slip-on gardeners clogs (like lined Crocs, very useful for the back door)
  • Gardening gloves (you can't have too many pairs)

Book club subscription if she reads a lot or a snack box sibscription if she's a foodie.

If your DH has enough pictures of her, he can make a Mother's day slideshow, are some examples https://smartshow-software.com/mothers-day-slideshow-ideas.php
Or you can make a family photo calendar with pictures of all the relatives, their birthdays, wedding anniversaries, etc.
