Everyday the news is a shit show

But out of our control so what's the point getting anxious to the point it affects your life?

How are you coping? Or do you not give a shit?!

I’ve deleted the news apps and swipe past.
Sky News was the last news app to go recently when I realised there was only one UK news story on there.

wherearemypastnames · 05/03/2025 15:43

Turn it off

Watch local news

There is nothing we can do
There is so much lies and misinformation
We are nothing

So we might as well just have what fun we can and ignore the powerful

3WildOnes · 05/03/2025 15:43

It doesn't really trouble me. There is literally nothing I can do to influence international politics.

LovelyJubly12 · 05/03/2025 15:47

I haven’t watched it for some time now. I don’t believe we’re being told the truth about a lot of things. It just creates enormous stress when we are powerless to change anything .I try to concentrate on what I can change .

WeGotCows · 05/03/2025 15:47

Observe don’t absorb.

Watch enough to keep abreast of world events if you must, but no more.

If you know something is going to be unbearable don’t watch it or read about it.

You will have a better effect on the world around you if you can stay pragmatic about these things and not lose your head, that’s whether the issue is on your doorstep or thousands of miles away.

99victoria · 05/03/2025 16:21

I stopped watching the news during covid. Never got back into the habit. I have the radio on all day so hear the headlines - If I want anymore detail about anything I go online.

Generally, though, I'm pretty shallow 🙂

DoNoTakeNo · 05/03/2025 16:42

After the last few months, I thought I was going to combust with the stress of the world's disasters, so have recently changed my attitude.

"Observe don't absorb" is really good advice, thanks for that Cows

I limit my sources to one traditional news media and one television channel; I can deep dive if I want but trust the headlines enough that it's not essential.

If I need a topical podcast, Newscast or Americast usually do the trick.

MissyB1 · 05/03/2025 16:42

I am concerned (and often infuriated!) but I deal with it by doing my yoga and reading books. I won’t ignore the news or hide from it, as I feel a responsibility to know what is going on in the world. I’m not judging other people, that’s just how I feel.

user1468867181 · 05/03/2025 16:47

I have reduced how much news I listen to as it either makes me angry or depressed. I focus on using my energy to support family and friends and the local community. I don't waste it on worrying about things that I can't change.

RachelLikesTea · 05/03/2025 16:49

Honestly, I am 53 and I don't feel that way at all. When I was at school, I lived in an area that would have been a priority target during the Cold War. We had drills at school so that we'd know what to do in the event of a nuclear bomb. And that was... get under your desk! Leaflets on how to survive radioactive fall our came through our front doors at home. Now that was a scary time. 911 was a scary time, The Falklands War was a scary time and war in the Balkans, that was a scary time, too.

Odras · 05/03/2025 16:50

I feel a bit sick to the depths of my stomach. A whole new world order is coming and we are all just at the mercy of it.

But mainly I learnt in Covid not to be worried about the what ifs… don’t worry about what may or may not happen because of leaders actions today. My life hasn’t changed. Nothing bad has happened. My own world is safe.

But I’m no help really. It’s unrelating doom and gloom.

I’m 56 and lived through all of those, this feels scarier because there are more lunatic dictator leaders out there this time - including the president of America.

HelpMeGetThrough · 05/03/2025 16:53

Don't give a shit. Nothing I can do about it, so why worry.

ShowAndGo · 05/03/2025 16:55

I listen to Americast, and sometimes Newscast, because the journalists put everything into context and analyse without being hysterical. They're pretty good at winnowing out what's actually likely to happen, and what's just Trumpian distraction techniques.

I also did a The Rest is History binge last year, and (is this comforting? I don't know...) you realise that all this stuff goes in cycles; we're just in one of those cycles, after a period of relative quiet in our own little corner of the world. A world, of course, has been far from quiet elsewhere.

I mean I remember most of this but it’s the disinformation that gets to me.

Trump and others who got into power by telling outright lies and millions of people just believing them.

HalfTermHoliday · 05/03/2025 17:01

Do my best to ignore a lot of it. I read headlines daily, but avoid much analysis and definitely internet comment/speculation on the worst bits.

I scan the Times online or watch the BBC and/or C4 news headlines.
I’ve unsubscribed from a couple of social media sites - MN is currently on probation. It’s amazing how much time I wasted on social media in the past, so this is actually a positive step.

I find watching travel programs, comedies and my favourite films quite relaxing. I’m also decluttering and getting on with jobs I had been putting off.

There’s no point doom scrolling, as there’s not a lot we can do.

TheDandyLion · 05/03/2025 17:05

Don't bother looking.

I have no impact on the outcome but I have control on what I what I choose to impact me.

shellyleppard · 05/03/2025 17:05

I don't watch the news....read it online.

Partybaggage · 05/03/2025 17:07

Don't read any of it. Hide threads. Avoid sites and apps that cause anxiety.

doubleshotcappuccino · 05/03/2025 17:09

Glued to Rest is Politics .. wouid love to just say will walk away for four years but it's not an option unless we want history to repeat itself but capitulating to appeasers

doubleshotcappuccino · 05/03/2025 17:09

by capitulating **

Dweetfidilove · 05/03/2025 17:14

I tune out when I feel overloaded.

Ultimately, I've reconciled with the fact that we get the leaders we deserve (voting/not voting/not reading or engaging critical thinking), and 'que sera sera' 🤷🏾‍♀️.

I'm the same. I always listened to R4 Today programme until covid and which point it almost became caricature. I switched to R3 which I hate but it gets me out of bed 😂
