...and expects women to be grateful if they do. I'll start.

Cooking
Dressing babies
Remembering social engagements
Interacting with wider family
Thinking about and choosing presents

Does it? I see more posts rightly reminding the poster that doing these things is a bare minimum to be expected from a fully functioning adult than giving any free passes.

TheMorels · 04/03/2025 10:51

I disagree. Lots of women post about useless partners, and they’ll get lots of replies telling them to LTB/not tolerate it/raise their bar.

Coffeeishot · 04/03/2025 10:52

I saw a post recently "loling" at how bad husbands were at shopping it's just rage bait though ime mumsnet doesn't put up with that shit.

SwanRivers · 04/03/2025 10:53

I'm not sure men get a free pass on Mumsnet even when they're doing just as much as their partners, or sometimes more?

Sunat45degrees · 04/03/2025 10:54

MN is a huge site. Yes, there are lots of posters who will be all, "aaah, men, what are they like". But there are just as many posters who will point out, repeatedly, that actually, doing these basic tasks is not tha tbig a deal.

It's not one size fits all.

Maybe the present thing. But then I'll give anyone a free pass on that because I hate it and am shit at it. But I try when required.

They really don't in fact I think they're harsher on men who don't perform household tasks than people are in real life

Laughing that mn give men a pass for anything- ltb has never been as prevalent as it is here now!!!

mrsm43s · 04/03/2025 11:19

I think the opposite. I think in general MN seems to think that men need to be fully (or mostly) responsible for financially supporting the family whilst doing 50% of the housework and childcare, while the women contributes nothing (or little) financially, gets equal spending power and isn't expected to do more than 50% around the house or with the children. Men aren't allowed hobbies or a break (work is their break, apparently) and need to take over as soon as work finishes, so that the woman can take a break from spending time with her child/ren.

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 04/03/2025 11:27

MN isn't a hive mind. There are as many differing opinions here as there are in society generally.

There is currently an active thread in Char called "My husband has done the weekly shop"......

I don't think that's true. A poster who says she works significantly less than her partner, especially if the kids are school age are usually told they should be pulling their weight. Men can have hobbies, just not ones that take them out for whole days / weekends frequently. Contributing financially is covered by adding up what it would cost in childcare if she worked FT.

@CurlewKate I think generally, the worst thing that women give men a free pass for is being aggressive. Women seem to enjoy seeing their men being aggressive and dominant over other men, but that is not a masculine characteristic. Also, if a man is generally aggressive, then naturally, he's also going to be aggressive to his partner.
