Claudia Lawrence Case: The New Claims

Since the day I heard the six o'clock news in 2009 breaking the news of Claudia Lawrence’s disappearance, I’ve followed the case over the years, just like many others. What seems to be common among us all, myself included, is how strange it is that she vanished — because people don’t just disappear, do they?

From what I’ve read online over the years, the police know who did it, but they don’t yet have enough evidence to prosecute. It’s also known in the York area, where Claudia is from, who was responsible and possibly involved.

In the past couple of days, I’ve seen a few different articles being posted about Claudia's disappearance. I believe they are from a podcast called “Answers for Claudia,” created by a journalist named Tom McDermott, who was approached by Claudia’s mum, Joan, for help. To explain the podcast, I found the following extract: “Tom has spent the past year immersed in Claudia’s friendship group, speaking to people in Malton and Heworth, where Claudia and her family lived, but something isn’t right — even now, people are frightened. Why?”

(This podcast was released last year, so I’m guessing someone at the Daily Mail has recently listened to it and is now creating articles based on the information from it.)

Some of the recent articles from the podcast mention the following:

  • A dog walker claimed to have found a backpack belonging to Claudia just days after she disappeared. The rucksack contained sandwiches wrapped in foil, but the dog walker initially left it alone. After hearing DCI Lucy Pope mention it in a press conference, the walker returned to look for it, only to find it had gone.
  • A van driver said he saw a woman about 20 miles away on the A1M near Wetherby the night before Claudia was last known to have gone to work. He recalled pulling over and calling the police. When he saw the missing woman’s face on the news a few days later, he said: "That’s the woman from the A1, that’s her."
  • A woman has claimed her abusive ex-partner might have been involved in Claudia’s disappearance. She said that during a heated argument, her ex-partner threatened to “get the gypsies to feed her to the pigs... just like what they did with Claudia Lawrence.” She also told the podcast that she believes her ex is the same person as someone caught on CCTV standing near Claudia’s house on the evening of her disappearance.

Additionally, Joan informed the police last Wednesday about a loft she discovered which is believed to have been missed during the initial search. It’s at the back of a cupboard with a small opening and since, it has been confirmed by the SIO in charge of the case that they plan to visit Claudia’s home for familiarisation purposes.

This case sincerely has me baffled, and I would love to see it solved for her mother's sake. To never know what happened to your child must be incredibly haunting and painful. I’m curious to know what everyone else thinks of these bizarre claims that have recently come to light?

I've listened to the podcast .
I think if there was any substance to these claims it would have come out long ago . I think sadly , like Suzy Lamplugh , we will never know what happened .

The only way they might find out at this point is if someone confessed/brought forward new evidence. Or they catch someone for a different crime and are able to link the two.

Unfortunately both are unlikely the longer time passes. The police and press failed her at the time by blaming her for her lifestyle choices.

I have been listening to this podcast and these new revelations are interesting and I wouldn't be surprised if they're relevant. But like a previous poster I think it will never be solved as the people who know who did it are keeping quiet and without their input the police can't do anything. The most likely thing is something like a deathbed confession which finally gives an answer, but whoever it is has got away with it this long and, sadly, I think her poor mum will never has the closure she so badly needs.

I wonder if the people who know and are keeping quiet are doing so out of loyalty or fear of meeting the same fate.

I know very little about the case but my guess is that it was a professional hit.
