Did anyone here ever walk out from their job

Or did you ever go home from your job and just never go back again?

I am really struggling with my job and my work and the shit that is flung at me. I did all of last week in work and also all weekend in work. No day off. Finished this evening just to get a load of messages. Just following up with me over things (see, no break whatsoever).

I am due in again tomorrow and there is talk of having me work again next weekend.

I never signed up to work like this.

But do you know what grinding my gears going above and beyond and working nearly right around the clock, just to be subjected to fucking crap when the person doing it won't even do half of the stuff that's being dumped onto my back.

Working until I get migraines.

Seeing tonight's messages and it's not the first time - I am tempted not to go back at all.

Yes I did, when I was about 18. Was working in a minimum wage job and the (micro)manager was becoming more and more outrageous. One day she tried to scald me for being on time and not starting 10 minutes early (unpaid) like she was constantly trying to force people to do. I told her where to shove her job and her attitude and it was so satisfying.

My late Mum did (sort of). And I've always been really proud of her for it.

Where she worked the owner was a bit of a drinker and she had anger issues when she'd had a few. She was being a nightmare with the junior girls and one day flew at one and chucked something, which missed the youngster, but broke a mirror.

My Mum was luckily close to finishing for that day. She stood up and said she was leaving and wouldn't be back until this owner had apologised to everyone in the room, promised to never repeat it, or she wouldn't give her the option next time.

Mum stormed out.

It took her 30 minutes to walk home and during that time I had just got in from school and kept getting phone calls from this desparate woman!

When Mum got in she said don't answer it until tomorrow morning!

She did fully apologise to everyone involved and never did it again. Mum went self employed about 12 months later as did quite a few of the others.

Are they really expecting you to work 7 days a week?

Yes, I have walked out of two jobs. One, I just left on the Friday afternoon and never went back, the other one I told the boss where to stick her job and walked out mid-shift. The second one felt particularly good.

I have no idea.

Last week Monday to Friday I must admit it was ok and I did have some flexibility during the week. But then Saturday and Sunday were somewhat long and intense and also tiring.

I was leaving yesterday to be told that I might be needed next Saturday too.

I never signed up to work Monday to Friday and weekends too. I don't might an odd weekend here and there but two of them in a row is a no.

I went home yesterday evening and I still wasn't allowed to be 'off' because I kept getting messages and that's when I got so unreliabley pissed off. It was 10 o clock last night when I had to put my phone on silent and ignore all the messages and phone in sick today.

Hello a fucking day off would be nice. Other workers are allowed days off.

Yes when I was 19. I worked in a bingo hall and the left hand didn’t know what the right hand was supposed to do and it was £3 a hour. The manager berated me in front of customers for asking to clarify an instruction. Then the caller grabbed me by the collar of my uniform polo shirt nearly choking me, he tried to laugh it off. He was an utter knob who tried to sleep with every female staff member but he gave me the utter creeps. The manager tried to apologise but I stormed into the staff room changed out of the polo shirt and threw it at him and the caller yelling ‘stuff your job!’ They phoned me a few days later as they were short of staff and were willing to ‘forgive and forget!’ I laughed and hung up!

You need to start quoting the working time directive to them

JustWalkingTheDogs · 03/03/2025 17:56

Not quite walked out, but I had a 3 month probation period in a new job, I had the last two weeks off for a pre planned holiday, I emailed in on the first week and told them I was resigning, and as I had a weeks notice period I wouldn't be returning. Best thing I ever did, it was a horrid toxic working environment. I'd kept in contact with my old boss, spoke to him whilst still on holiday and he gave me my old job back, plus a pay increase so on the Monday after I returned from holiday I started back in my old job. Most of my work colleagues didn't even realise I'd resigned and just thought I'd been on holiday .

Next time they message you when you are at home, reply saying that you will reply as soon as you get into work.

Snowmanscarf · 03/03/2025 18:16

Not quite walked out, but nearly. . Found out that newer, inexperienced members of staff were getting the same pay as me, Asked for a pay rise, Dudn’t get it. Within two weeks I’d found a new job and handed my notice in.

CandyCane457 · 03/03/2025 18:20

This probably doesn’t count in the grand scheme of things, but when I was 15 I had a Saturday job in a cafe. Id worked there almost a year and one day it was so hot and sunny, all my friends were out at the skate park, and I thought… screw this, and just walked out without even saying anything. Then had the absolute nerve to go back the following week to hand in my uniform and collect my wages (we always got paid a week later in a little brown envelope).

Pomped · 03/03/2025 18:33

What kind of industry is this?

AutumnLeeeeves · 03/03/2025 18:38

Not quite walked out, but my direct line manager was a pain in the ass, always nitpicking on anything I did. I knew she was being a dick so I resubmitted a rota which she had done herself and she tore it apart saying it was all wrong.

The company then decided to change everyone's contracts and gave us an 8 week consultation period. I decided I wasn't going to accept the new contract but just kept stalling when they asked me to bring back my signed one. Waited until the last day of the consultation period, wrote them a letter to say that I wasn't going to accept the new contract and that given they had technically given me notice of my contract ending that day, then that day would be my last. It was bloody brilliant watching their faces as they read the letter!

This sounds insane. I work in project management known for the need for worker flexibility in order to resolve risks before they become costly issues and work flat out when needed to meet deadlines. However, I have never had my employer contact me once I’ve logged off for the day. Even my more senior colleagues have rarely ever had this happen - we may proactively check on ourselves when things are a little dicey but that’s different as we chose to. Contacting employees outside contracted hours can be considered an invasion of your privacy and perhaps you should raise this with HR? Your work life balance is not being respected at all! Also, you are entitled to be able to know what your working weeks will look like and so they should be drawing up your timetable in advance! Contact CAB perhaps to get more help dont just Jack the job in immediately as what if your next one takes similar liberties with you? Wishing you all the best.

Showercap22 · 03/03/2025 18:50

Sort of. I'm a teacher and fed up of the bad behaviour and bullshit management.
I've not technically walked out, but I've been off sick with stress for most of my notice period, and likely to stay off until the end.

BurntBroccoli · 03/03/2025 20:47

I was once sent to a solicitor's office on a temping contract. Having had no training at all, I was told to man the switchboard which I did my best to do. I put a call through without asking someone's name and the solicitor (male) screamed at me. I was only young and just got up and left!
