5yo DD has told me twice that she actually likes it when people are grumpy with her... ?

What could this mean?

She said it a few weeks ago, and again this evening 🤔
I have no idea why she's saying it...

So do lots of young children! It's all part of their emotional development......the girls in my 8 year old daughter's class are forever falling out over nothing, most have admitted to their parents that they enjoy the drama.

She might enjoy having the chance to have a cry or to yell at someone.

I suspect this happens with one of my DC.

She might like the energy of it. It might be intriguing to her if she is used to everyone being lovely all the time

I used to get a kick out of winding my parents up when I was a kid. I’m a bit of a thrill seeker and I think that was it.

i wish my parents had explained how it made them feel so I understood it wasn’t just a jolly for me but actually caused them genuine stress. I feel bad now im a parent and realise how hard my poor mum had it.

MasterBeth · 02/03/2025 22:00

It means she is 5 years old and will say all kinds of stuff that 35 year old or 55 year old probably won't say.

Lots of children think any attention is positive compared to none. I don't know that they're aware if it though.

I would be asking why and checking that 1. She's being responded to enough and is able to elicit attention and 2. Her 'positive' interactions aren't in some way false or stressful.

It could be as simple as she finds people funny when they're cross. My DD used to laugh if another child fell over for a while. She turned out very empathetic.

Astronautstar · 02/03/2025 22:04

And she could be very self aware and realise that she had a little bit of power if she's deliberately riled someone.

I think it depends who it is.

Terribletwoss · 02/03/2025 22:04

Honestly she’s 5 and probably just saying it out of defiance, unless you have other reasons to worry I wouldn’t give it a second thought.

I think its the teachers at her school she's taking about
