Curly hair

I have hair that resembles Hagrid. I want defined, lovely curls, and I know that it's achievable - I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. I want the curls to stay the shape they are - but start from the top of my head and have a defined texture all the way down.

I've tried 'plopping' and using Only Curls with their mousse and turban thing. I've tried Cantu cream (worked beautifully while I was pregnant, looks rubbish now). I've tried various different creams etc over the years. I've tried diffusing. Sleeping in plaits. Sleeping in a silk scarf.

Now just seen an advert for curl smith and considering it. But it's just going to be more of the same if I don't know what I'm doing.

What am I missing?

I too have curly hagrid hair but can keep it in curls if it’s well moisturised. When I’m due a trim or when it’s dry it’s super frizzy

My routine is

Try a good leave in conditioner, I use a body shop one but it’s running out and will need to find an alternative.

For product I use gel, a blue one from VO5 I think, it’s only a pound. Put that on wet hair after the conditioner and comb through section by section. Put comb underneath and comb up, then gently scrunch each section after combing.

Then leave it alone to air dry. DO NOT TOUCH IT until it’s completely dry. It goes crunchy and takes hours to dry but when it’s dry and you scrunch up the curls they last and don’t frizz. If you touch it when it’s drying it goes frizxy

At night I loosely plop it on my head in a ponytail held by a loose scrunchie

I wouldn’t go spending lots of money on new fancy products. Do you have a decent conditioner and a firm hold gel? ECO gel is cheap and lasts ages, very strong hold, for example. Gel, scrunch, maybe plop in a cotton tshirt for a bit, then don’t touch it. More gel than you think - if it goes hard that’s okay, just scrunch it out when it’s dry. More a game for the summer but that’s the most reliable, simple method and I suspect it’s down to method not products. I do abide by the curly girl method so am fussy on products and ingredients in them but I think it’s probably irrelevant anyway
