Trying to get clarity in my house 7 bags so far.

Many, many more than 7 bags. As you begin to see more clearly, it’s easy to get rid of more. I feel the end is in sight with my house now…

heartbroken22 · 02/03/2025 16:58

How long have you been decluttering for?

Tell us your story, OP!

How long have you been tackling your clutter? What are you getting rid of?

Gosh like 2 bags max 😆 I want to get rid of half our stuff after visiting child this morning said ‘it’s messy your house isn’t it!’ - not the first time we’ve had that 😅 my problem is, I don’t want to get rid of the puzzles, books etc - I want the kids to fucking use them!

We have also had a ‘wow your house is the poshest I’ve ever seen’ from a different kid - he’s my fave haha ❤️

Midnightlove · 02/03/2025 17:16

Probably about 20 bags in the last 6 months, now I've got a skip and it's over half full in just 2 days 🤣 still need to tackle the garage

ViciousCurrentBun · 02/03/2025 17:22

About 15 bags over last 4 months. 5 were clothes and 1 was old bedding. Also got rid of a double bed frame.

7 bags? How big? Lunch bags? Bags for life? Bin bags? Wheelie bin bags?

I decluttered this past few weeks, and binned about two thirds of a wheelie bin full of stuff. Took to charity shops about half a wheelie bin full of stuff. Put in the loft another half a wheelie bin full. I don't know how many 'bags' it would be altogether.

Cleaned the house from top to bottom, and it's really shiny now. Smile

7 bags meaning black bin bags 😂 I'm just sick and tired of cleaning and it being the same all the time

Decluttering is like cleaning, you have to keep doing it. But the less clutter/dirt you bring into your house the less there is to declutter. I remove about 4 bin bags every 6 weeks but I have young children and I feel like I’m barely treading water. It is getting better but I think the slower pace means there is no amazing transformation feeling.

Hayley1256 · 03/03/2025 09:38

I did a big declutter before Xmas and it was around 30 black bin bags of tat that I paid someone to come and get rid off. Then I had around 20 black bags of clothes that I arranged for a charity to come and collect. I've now been declitting once a month and it's much more manageable

How many rooms in your house? We have a 4 bed house, and 7 bin bags would be less than a bag per room which isn’t much.

heartbroken22 · 03/03/2025 09:39

@RoseMarigoldViolet I always have a mini declutter every month or few months. But this time I see I need to get rid of a lot of stuff to manage my house.

5 x bags full of kids/adult clothes outgrown or otherwise

2 bags of toys

I need to get a move on today but have to deal with getting kids snacks and school lunch stuff for now

I did a massive minimalist clear out about four years ago. We then downsized and I have around 2/3 less stuff. I have one storage cupboard for stuff we need.

I found it helpful to take everything which would be in a loft or was a duplicate of something else. For example, kitchen stuff and books.

Don't keep much for 'memories/sentiment' - that's an easy trap to fall into.

I found 'minimal mom' videos really helpful.

Also look up Swedish death clean - a concept whereby you don't leave your loved ones loads of shit to sort after you're gone.

Sounds depressing but I found it liberating.

I am a very messy person though and literally cannot cope with endless stuff.

11 tip loads in a large car and some loads we had to be creative with space! TBF that was over a period of about 3 months and we were moving house. New house is clutter free and I want/need to keep it that way!

This spurred me on. My house was also full of the past. I wanted space to live in the now. We each have a big plastic memory box to contain sentimental items.

I've done several declutters now. Each time I could see more clearly what was just taking up space in my home.

Now every room can breathe. I think I'll need a couple more goes to be finished, but the end is in sight.

Three things I've learned:

1 get everything out of the house asap. This is harder than the decluttering

2 I bring in much less now. What I do bring into the house is much more meaningful

3 Areas stay tidy easily where there's space for them to breathe

hoodiemassive · 03/03/2025 18:13

@DontKnowAnythingAnymore you are spot on about bringing less into the house - took me four years to work this out!!!!!!

Maitri108 · 03/03/2025 18:15

The first time I decluttered, God knows. This time 9 large bags of rubbish, 6 recycling bags and 6 donation bags. One bulk rubbish collection.

heartbroken22 · 04/03/2025 13:41

I find I do loads then stop then start again.

I'm itching to have a big clear out of my son's room after GCSE's in June.
My friends son may want some uniform/ pe kit etc but I think there will be about 6 bin bags of stuff. I don't want to stress him out before his exams though so the clear out needs to wait until the end of June. I've had a clean of his room today and removed some empty deodorant cans and boxes and things like that. So annoying but staying calm as he is meant to be studying so no time to be tidy (apparently).

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 04/03/2025 14:00

I am very very tidy and I hate clutter so I declutter quite regularly- I take a bag of stuff to the charity shop every couple of weeks! I did linen at the weekend and sent 3 duvet cover sets that I never use to charity and cookbooks yesterday, chucking out 2 I never look at. I don't know how the people on Sort Your Life Out live the before way at all (but I love the show!)
