Bamboo! How to kill it from invading from neighbours garden

Neighbours have a wall of bamboo along the fence, they built in something to stop the roots, but it’s now spread y see the fence into the garden. What weed killer do I need to kill the bits that come through as I know I can’t just cut it off and can’t dig down to put in more barriers.

fuck same this is going to make my house unsellable isn’t it. It already blocks out the sun and is roof/gutter height.

The only ‘advice’ I got from landscapers was probably illegal. They advised to pour old cooking oil, or even better, engine oil, over the fence onto it. It will absolutely ruin the soil. It might ruin your soil. It’s quite a nuclear option.
Your neighbours are really selfish. We didn’t in the end, I can’t see how you would get away with it, and ended up moving house and left it to be someone else’s problem, it was such a headache!

bluesatin · 02/03/2025 13:38

Personally I'd spray it with glyphosate (the professional strength, if you can get it) or else you could sue the neighbour!

It's not that hard to manage. Tell the neighbours in the hope they'll do something.

If it's lawn, then mowing will keep it down. Otherwise, The roots slice easily, so you could cut a trench along that edge and go down with a spade slicing on a regular basis.

A couple of times a year, or when you notice a shoot coming.

Clumping non invasive Bamboo is much easier to control.
Do your neighbours have this type of Bamboo?

If they have a running Bamboo, you could advise them to remove it and plant Clumping, non invasive Bamboo.

I would ask advice at a nursery. Both you and your neighbour would benefit from knowing the effective way to control the spread of the Bamboo.

FuckingBamboo · 03/03/2025 18:25

No idea if it’s clumping or running, it’s the height of the roof gutters, properly tall and quick growing. Maybe 5m wide. @Coatsoff42 would we poor oil on the shoot in our garden? It’s come up in an area with gravel under a tree, so don’t want to kill the tree or cut its roots.

This was absolutely not the case with the bamboo that came over from our neighbours. The roots when underground and just came up all over. We had to have a mini digger to get rid of it. It also broke through some concrete on the street.

I think there are different kinds of bamboo though.

Anjo2011 · 03/03/2025 18:37

Our neighbours also inherited bamboo from previous owners. It looks for water sources. It came under their patio into ours and wrapped itself around the drains. Thankfully there was little damage. We spoke to them and they had the whole lot removed, it cost them a lot of money. Depending on the type it can get out of control. Go and have the conversation don’t leave it too late.

I killed the bamboo in my garden by cutting it down as low as possible and then pouring weedkiller down the stumps, very handy they are hollow tubes. worked a treat. I can’t remember what weed killer I used, just something i picked up in the supermarket.

Same here injected neat Root Out into the hollow stem every time a new shoot appeared. Eventually neighbours dug out bamboo because was damaging our garden wall with shoots coming through mortar joints.

I like the idea of pouring weed killer down the tube. Wondering whether to do that chopping it off fresh or spraying and letting it die first

We have a similar problem albeit not right next to our property. I chopped it all down to the roots and poured white vinegar into the holes. So far so good, but this was only at the end of last summer so will have to assess if it’s done the job.

MissHollysDolly · 03/03/2025 22:23

If it's running into your garden you need to just cut the tip if you're going down the pouring weed killer route. So you get as much in as poss and then it travels "back" further.
It's awful, annoying stuff.

I don't think you can unilaterally decuded you are going to poison someone else's plant! That's criminal damage!

stayathomegardener · 03/03/2025 22:40

I would send photos to your insurers for guidance.

It's invasive.

You can and should take whatever measures you need to to destroy it.

Planting bamboo in the soil and not in pots off the ground where the roots can't burst through into the soil should be a punishable offense.

On a dry day...

Chop it off to the ground.

Paint undiluted glyphosate / Roundup on the cut end. Wait while it dries (2 hours).

Water it.

Rinse and repeat. The process can take years.

Ask your neighbour to get rid of his using the same method (no spray).

Or hire someone with a digger and hope all the roots can be excavated.

The landscaper said to pour it over the fence into their bamboo’s roots. They said it’s been very effective for them personally. BUT that soil is then useless for growing in. It is a nuclear option but if I was looking at damage to my property and my neighbours were not sorting it out… I don’t know if I could not at least try.
I also tried the weed killer option but it didn’t work for me. It killed the shoots on my side of the fence, but the main plant just sent more over.

The plant has now grown on my side of the fence. I am not allowed to remove bamboo that is now in my flower bed and going to grow across my grass? I’m not pouring weed killer over the fence.
neighbours like the bamboo and the height, presumably as it is all hanging over our fence. We’ll be cutting it back to the vertical border line.

1SillySossij · 11/03/2025 11:24

The roots don't grow deep, the most usual thing to do is to dig down and insert a barrier

ColourlessGreenIdeasSleepFuriously · 11/03/2025 11:37

I poured boiling water down the hollow tubes. Boil the fucker to death. Less pollutant than roundup.

muddyford · 11/03/2025 11:38

The sort of bamboo that runs like that is actually more invasive than Japanese knotweed. I wouldn't touch a house with any bamboo in sight. Could you go and speak to your neighbour? Easier said than done, I know.

oxfordmarmalade · 11/03/2025 11:39

Our neighbour has a large bamboo down the bottom of the garden, never had a problem in the five years we've been here. Until last year after with it being so wet. We found it marching along our side in amount the borders. Dug out what we could after a massive effort and used SBK on anything else we couldn't remove. It did halt it for a while but there is one shoot I can see now!
I've discussed it with a tree expert/landscaper who told me they do take from 5 years to get going and that the only treatment is a professional herbicide (for the actual plant) or a vertical barrier/membrane around a metre deep my side of the fence.
I have inherited clump forming bamboo which cause no issues at all.
