Anyone good with houseplants? What's wrong with mine?

Someone gifted me this me a month ago. My heart sank, as plants aren't my thing but I do care for something once it's in my possession! The problem is that plants never seem to do well in my care!
Anyway, I haven't overwatered it. I've stuck to once a week as advised. It has light but not direct light. I don't know what to do about the brown leaves.
Would it be too cruel just to get rid of it? Sad
To be fair, some of the leaves were already a bit brown when the cellophane was taken off, but it's just getting worse.
Thank you Smile

At this time of year once a week might be too much. If you lift it up (if it's a plastic pot in a pot) is it aat in a little puddle of water? And where is it? The photo looks very dark so if that's where it is all the time it needs moving.

It's either overwatering or it's too close to a cold window/hot radiator. But I'd suspect watering fully once a week is too much over winter, i only water the ones near radiators that often at this time of year.

Is it near a fire place that is being lit?

Cut the brown leaves off and let it dry out a bit.

I spy a radiator in the corner of the shot. I think the humidity is too low which is causing the brown leaves. Do you have a windowsill it can go on? It doesn't matter too much about direct light at this year as the sun isn't very strong. It may also need watering more than once a week if your house is warm - mine do, especially those which are slightly too big for the pot, which plants from supermarkets often are. Once the soil seems dry then give it another drink, it may need to be little and often to make sure there the water doesn't stand in the bottom of the outer pot and damage the roots.
