I’ve changed jobs, I am in an industry that is brand new to me.
After a slow start I am flying, I think I’m flying anyway.
Lets just say that my activities are bringing in a substantial amount of new business.

Im not sure it’s appreciated or noticed by upper management.
That said I’ve had the green light for a few new major projects without needing to jump through hoops & present to them because they are “no brainier ideas”.. Normally you have to present to them, get them talking then they decide if funding & resources are worthy. There’s several different departments to do this to, my ideas have bypassed these.

I think I need a raise and promotion. There seems to be no process, it’s announced that someone is promoted and that’s it.

How have you got your promotion, who did you speak to, what tactics did you employ to secure promotion and pay rises?

Thanks for sharing.

Be amazing at your job - you need to do it to a high enough standard that people know they can fully rely on you to get the job done, and that others ask for your advice. Once you're at the stage that people come to you if they have an issue, you know promotion will get a whole lot easier.

Have the eyes and ears of someone higher up - this works two-fold. One, your work gets noticed more by those who have decision-making capacity. Two, it gives you an insight into what those in charge are looking for. It also makes my thrid point much easier.

Train for the next job you want. It won't come flying to you; you have to work for it. Work out what the next stage in your career is going to look like, shadow people who already do this job, volunteer to take on some of their tasks, complete certified training that will help you in the next stage.

Be open about your next step. Talk to the people around you about what you want to do next - they may well have ideas on how you can achieve it or share their experience with you. Talk to recruiters in your field, who can look out for a suitable job for you. Look at job adverts, see how much they pay and don't be afraid to negotiate with your employer. Think about how many men approach this - if you don't ask, you will definitely not get.

I have been promoted almost annually over the last few years, after being stuck at the same point for many years before that. Once I changed my mindset from "I wish" to something more productive, things started moving fast. You will need to be open to moving companies to get ahead, in which case, always leave with relationships intact and keep in touch with a few key people.

I’m a bit confused by your question. I’ve had lots of promotions that came with pay rises. This means that I have applied (ie completed an application and been interviewed competitively against other candidates) and been successful in being appointed to a different post. I’ve never just ‘been promoted’ by being good at my job - which you seem to be implying that you want? Maybe that’s how it works in other industries though.

In my experience getting a promotion into a role means that you are doing the role (or a lot of aspects of the role already)…and the gap is there to be filled/created.

I would indicate to your manager (and others in the company) that you are keen to progress your career, you are motivated to get promoted and earn more. Throw out a few statistics about what you have achieved. Ask what opportunity there is for promotion in the company. Ask about the wider industry. This will flag to management that the status quo won't work forever, that they can't take you for granted and they might lose you.

And keep on being great at your job while you are waiting for the next thing to come along.
