My son would be 6 yo soonhe has 4 close friends what he would like to invite. He doesn't like the big parties. I don't want to do it at home. We thought about a soft play and he was fine with that but they said minimum 10 kids... Any ideas guys?

I'm taking mine to a trampoline park followed by McDonald's for similar numbers. Just booked the trampolining and paid for for guests, not booked it as a party. Then walk across to McDs, let them pick a happy meal and give each a cupcake/small treat to take home.

Trampoline park?
Cinema?
Local farm?

Loads of places will specify a minimum but just don't book it as a party.

Bowling?

Cinema?

Mini golf?

Pottery painting?

Indoor climbing?

Just pay to go to soft play without booking it as a party and then go out for lunch or back home for a party tea.

Could you have a meet at the soft play without booking a party? I don't know how much you'd be able to rely on getting 4 kids in at a particular time, but you could maybe get at least one of the parents to stay, buy coffee for the adults and a small meal/snack for the children, and sing Happy Birthday while handing out party bags with cake already inside.

You might even be able to persuade the soft play place to let you pre-book a table Grin It's the special decorated rooms and the dedicated staff that they want 10 minimum for.

Well you could just take 5 kids as a ‘not a party’ visit to soft play followed by snacks after?
But you have years of soft play parties ahead of you so nice to do something different.
If you’d rather not at home could you visit a local attraction such as a farm zoo / regular zoo with a picnic if weather ok.
One of mine did a Jodrell Bank visit at that age because he was into space and telescopes.
If you want to keep it lower cost you could do a visit to the coast with a beach treasure hunt.

A living museum ? There’s a few by us like the Black country museum where the staff dress up and is fun.
One time we went ‘ geocaching ‘ then home for pizza. Another time my dc wanted to play football then home for ice cream .
It depends where you are in the country - if near a city there’s loads of choices if more rural less do but probably some great places.

Just don't book a party sorry but its not hard to work out. I have 4 kids and we don't do parties so we just go and book then food after 😕

mindutopia · 01/03/2025 14:59

Just do soft play but not as a party. Buy them food in the cafe. You may need to skip the cake and candles, but just shove some cupcakes in the party bags.

PiastriThePastry · 01/03/2025 14:59

Trampoline park or a farm/mini theme park, something like that.

Phineyj · 01/03/2025 15:04

We took DD plus a couple of nursery friends to the Gruffalo stage show with tea after at around that age. Xmas birthday so always awkward for parties.

Monika007 · 01/03/2025 15:15

That's a great ideas!! Especially with the cup cakes to take home! Thank you

You could do an old fashioned party at home.
eg - pirate party - they come in pirate costume, or you supply hats and eye patches.
You have a treasure hunt.
There are lots of ways of doing this, but one is to hide 10 pieces of jigsaw puzzle around the place, you have 10 clues. You can read the clue and they have to work it out and find the place, and there is a puzzle piece
and when they find them all they make the picture and it shows them where the treasure is.
Then games aroud pirate theme, all the traditional ones, like pass the parcel, musical chairs etc etc
You can invent (google) pirate themed games.

The birthday tea would fit around kitchen table as there are only 5 boys.
After tea they can just play for a while.

No-one does them any more, so these parties are surprisingly successful.

CarpetKnees · 01/03/2025 15:55

I agree with @steppemum
Why is it that you think you don't want to do a party at home @Monika007 ?

reluctantbrit · 01/03/2025 16:05

I took DD and some friends to a trampoline park. We ordered pizza and bought them plenty of drinks. The cafe was happy to give us plates and a knife for the cake (spoke to them at booking and left a tip).

Depends on the children. If you can guarantee none are runners, then a day out. Dd1 loved going with three friends to the Science museum - I think they did that 3 years running.

With dd2 she always wanted massive parties, so we compromised and did a tea party for four on the day and a cheap one with lots of people at the weekend.

The party of four I used to do a story which involved them having tasks to do, which got them rewards that went into a little bag.

So they'd start with looking for the "magic" stones (shiny stones - on each in their bags) then have to cross the raging stream using paper stepping stones (and get bubble mixture to go in the bag) then collect all the spilt fairy drops (smarties) and put them into a tube (and that goes into the party bag) etc until they arrive at the fairy mansion for a party feast.
Worked well for the girls.

Zoo, trampolines, go karting, theme park.
