Just wondering if dogs owners just don't hear their barking dogs?

Before I start this is not an owner bashing post or an I hate dogs one. I don't hate dogs but I am scared of them and will never have one partly because of being scared and the other because of the commitment to them that they rightly deserve.

I am just really curious if those that leave their dogs outside all day and their dog is a barker, do they just not hear them anymore.

Barking dogs drive me insane so any barking is quietened down straight away but generally only happens when people approach the house or knock on the door and one of my dogs pretty much only ever barked a couple of time in her whole life. Don’t know how people tolerate it. Some people seem to actively encourage it in their dogs by holding on to balls, etc and not throwing it for their dogs until they start barking. Have always taught my dogs there is no reward for barking.

I wonder if those barking all day dogs are left alone while owner goes to work?

If not, and owners are home, I am also baffled as to how they put up with the noise. Maybe they just get used to it, but it's terrible for those around them for sure.

There has been a dog barking all this morning it’s driving me nuts. If my dog goes in the garden and starts barking he’s straight back in. So inconsiderate and I agree how do people not notice!

My dog is never left outside all day. She goes outside to toilet and has a potter about for 10 minutes or so and I'm always just a few feet away because I leave the door wide open, regardless of time of year, (dog theft is concern.) I don't like yappy dogs so all of my dogs have been raised to bark only if there is a reason to do so.

vodkaredbullgirl · 01/03/2025 14:29

Mine are not left out all day, as soon as they bark they are in.

notedbiscuits · 01/03/2025 14:31

Ether the owners are ignorant or get used to the noise.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 01/03/2025 14:35

I can't bear it, first bark and I'm straight on mine to shush! I find it the most nerve shredding noise.

Pinkissmart · 01/03/2025 14:36

They get used to the noise. Just like parents of young children get used to that noise too 😁

No, we have a neighbour whose dog barks from 6.30am. I don't need an alarm clock!
I genuinely think some owners just can't hear them, or tune it out

Our next door neighbour has 2 dogs and one just barks no stop. He seems to be out all the time and the other is in and there is someone there all day most days unless they go out as a family.

I just think many dog owners must just be oblivious. Or maybe don't know what to do?

Or they just don't care!

Could be. Some owners are out all day and don't know what's happening.

Llttledrummergirl · 01/03/2025 15:34

Mine spent a fair amount of yesterday barking. She was communicating with a number of dogs in the area who were all responding to each other. The different pitches make it sound like a conversation.

It's not all day, and it's not everyday, but it makes her happy.

@EmpressOfTheThread

Actually, I was more thinking about the owners who let their dogs out into the garden at 11.30pm or 4.30am to have a good long barking session!!

One of my relatives moved house after enduring months of their next door neighbour's dog left out in the garden all day long every day, barking non-stop...

It's about time dogs were licensed (for all sorts of reasons - noise, dog shit, bad behaviour, attacks).

HangingOver · 01/03/2025 16:35

I give mine five wuffs then bring him in for the neighbours sake. He likes shouting back at the other neighborhood dogs and he'd do it all day if I let him.

myplace · 01/03/2025 16:41

Occasionally I’ve had to leave mine to bark if I’m up to my elbows in something really messy and I can’t pause. That’s not often though. I generally bring him in as soon as he barks.

I have to be a bit careful because he barks to get what he wants so on occasion I need to not give in. That’s not relentless barking though. It’s standing in front of me shouting ’Mum!’ Pause. ‘Mum!’ Pause. ‘Mum!’.

We worked really hard on barking, but unfortunately he’s just opinionated. We can’t leave him out, because he barks. We have to keep certain blinds closed.

Some dogs bark and it’s a full time job stopping them.

Decapitatedsausage · 01/03/2025 16:42

We used to live really rurally and had a dog flap so the dogs could go in the garden whenever they liked. They would bark if people approached the house, or if a tractor would pass (maybe once or twice a day!) We now live in civilisation and I’m genuinely concerned they are going to get doggy asbo’s as they are so triggered by everyone walking past or other dogs barking. We are getting a dog trainer in to help, but I’m not entirely sure how trainable pugs are to be honest 😬
