If you like hiking

I'm recently getting into walking/ light hiking with my toddler and this is probably a silly question that I should know the answer to, but how do you manage your period if you're out walking on trails with a toddler for the day with no facilities nearby? Mine is very heavy and I'd need to change a pad every hour or two so this really puts me off. I used to use a cup but since giving birth it just isn't as comfortable. Is there an easy solution I'm missing that would enable me to head out?

Depends how remote you are. In the past on long hikes I have changed my pad in a bush, popped it in a little nappy bag (or two) and desposed at home. But I’ve only done that once or twice when very desperate and I’ve got somewhere to hide!

Generally I’ve found if it’s remote enough that there’s no facilities for the whole day, there’s usually enough cover for a wee in a bush off the path. If you can nip for a wee you can change a pad as well. Maybe triple layer it - tampon, pad and period pants. Remove one at a time till all are full? And of course wrap in paper and put in nappy bag to take away to bin elsewhere.

Or, plan light hiking around loos on the occasion it’s your period.

The layering is actually a great idea!

Layering is good. I’ve done that before now.

or as pp have said, find some where where you can’t be seen, change pad/tampon, nappy sack and dispose at home or plan walks round toilets .

To be honest when I’ve been really heavy I’ve not gone on all day hikes, but that’s just me.

I would try a couple of different menstrual cups too find one that is comfortable for your new shape.

24hr Modibodi period pants. Worked well when DD had her period on a day hike out with the Scouts or spent the whole day at the stable where the toilets are disgusting.

For hikes around 3-5 hours they are definitely fine.

You can layer them with a pad first and then remove the pad behind a push and put it in a nappy bag.

It’s never been an issue for me. But I’d say just like you do at home, but take any pads home in a wet bag so can be washed (if reusable) or discarded (if not). I tend to wear a reusable pad with period pants, so would just whip the pad off and replace with fresh, with pants for extra insurance and would pack in my bag to be washed at home.
