Double prams and doorways

I am looking at getting a side by side double pram rather than a tandem one, but my only concern is that it won't fit through standard doorways such as shops etc... I live in a town with quite a few 'older' type buildings and feel like these strollers may be too wide.

I was mainly looking at the Joie Aire twin stroller. I know there are slimline ones on the market such as the Mountain Buggy Duet but i would like to not spend so much money if possible.

How do other people get on with these buggies?

I preferred tandem for this reason.

I had a tandem before but found the weight distribution difficult so that's why I'm looking at the side by side ones

I had a baby jogger double and it did fit through all external doors (front doors and shop doors) I loved it and got the same buggy again the next time I had a small gap.

Bugaboo fits through standard doors and busses

I've got a mountain buggy duet and it's fab pushchair. Never had any problem getting it through doorways, even narrow ones, etc. Can get different attachments to suit needs. I see them a lot of marketplace and some really good condition ones, so maybe look there if you don't want the cost of a brand new one.

We liked the Jane tandem for this reason.

Out n about double. It's the same width as a wheelchair so fits through the majority of doors.

ButIDontLikePeas · 01/03/2025 13:24

Maybe have a look at the Joie Estrella? I think it's new - it looks like its the same width as an Out n About nipper but only £300 new. I've been eyeing it up but I haven't bought it yet. It looks like it can do 22kg in each seat, whereas lots of the cheap side by side ones can only do 15kg, which is no good for my 3yo. Plus it's the same price as buying the second seat for my uppababy vista. 🥴

If you have a vista as your tandem, Out n About now do a trade in scheme to get money off a new Nipper in place of your Vista.

ButIDontLikePeas · 01/03/2025 13:26

Just looked it up and the Joie Estrella is 3.5cm narrower than the Joie Aire. So that might help you if you want to stick with Joie.

bugaboo donkey works. Buy second hand!

DappledThings · 01/03/2025 13:34

One of the reasons I loved my Mountain Buggy Duet. Fitted through all doors and on all buses easily.

KnickerlessParsons · 01/03/2025 13:49

I managed with one in a sling/backpack and one in the pram/pushchair.

Cakemaker2222 · 01/03/2025 13:51

I got out n about v4 for £300 (great condition) and it fits through most doorways

PrincessAnne4Eva · 01/03/2025 13:52

I had the Joie Aire double and only found one doorway anywhere I went in the UK or Ireland that it wouldn't fit through. It was perfect in every way and fitted in the boot of my VW Golf which was the most important consideration at the time.

Thanks, I'll have a look at these suggestions

I had a bugaboo donkey which fitted fine through doors as long as you don't have the car seat extenders on. Got rid of that as soon as DTs were out of the carry cots and got the BJCM twin. Could not fault that buggy it was brilliant. No issue with doors. This was some time ago now, I think they do bassinets now

Monstermashermashedthemonster · 01/03/2025 18:48

I've got the ikkle bubba venus no issues getting it through doors or on buses.

I had a abc design double and it didn't fit in the buggy space on the locsl buses.

LegoLandslide · 01/03/2025 18:52

I had a baby jogger city double, it was quite hard to manoeuvre (absolutely no turning circle) but it did fit through doors. I don't remember ever having a problem. I did much prefer the tandem for the bus though.

I had a 3 year age gap and actually found the side by side double more unbalanced than the tandem. All the weight was on the older child's side.

BeSharpBee · 01/03/2025 18:54

I loved my baby jogger city mini.

But don't buy new, we got ours with carrycot for £75 off eBay, it was pristine, and sold it on FB years later for the same price. Just got a new mattress for the carrycot for the newborn.
