I'm going on a ski trip with my school (i work there). Ive never been skiing before and have 5 weeks until I leave. We are hiring skis, poles and helmet out there but I need to get everything else.
I already have some base layers, mittens and snoods.
What else do i need?
Any tips when I'm on the slopes too? I've had basic lessons here on a dry slope a few years ago.
Should I take a bump bag on the slope?
Should I take ski googles or will sunglasses be enough?
Will I need a mid layer in April or not?
Do I need snow boots?
What kinds of things do people wear when they are not on the slopes?
Sorry so many questions! Just want to be prepared!

easter is usually toasty

i never wear thermal trousers

baselayet and fleece only and often at easter it’ll just wear baselayer under my jacket. If you have a fleece gilet that be best over baselayer as it’s normally really warm

defo sunglasses

i do insist on fresh socks everyday as they get seriously sweaty - there’s no way i’d wear them twice without washing through first

casual jeans jumper and trainers for night time

We find these brilliant for keeping gloved hands warm.

Love these for January skiing but I really wouldn’t bother for April. Chances are you’ll be sweating and stripping layers. Last time I skied in April the chairlift thermometer was showing 19 degrees and there was a pack of young women (seasonaires I’m guessing) in the queue wearing only their ski trousers and bikini tops!

When we started skiing back in 1990, our ski gear came from C&A.
DSs and DH each had a jacket mainly black but with a very large bright panel for visibility; each was a different colour, boys green and yellow, DH purple.
A cheerful little family song went:
‘One for all and all for one,
The Budgie the Canary
And the Flying Plum’.

A Tee shirt for sitting in the sun at lunchtime. It is likely, though not guaranteed, that the snow will be rock hard in the morning and pure slush in the afternoon. Go out early and stop for lunch and then relax is my advice.

Boiled sweets! I always have a few in my pocket and then you can have one on the ski lift and it helps moisten your mouth and give you a burst of sugar.
What is your role on the trip? Will you be skiing with the pupils? Would you be expected to have a small first aid kit or anything with you (I guess not as presumably they would rely on the ski school). That might impact on whether you need a bag with you or not. Otherwise, it depends on the size and location of your pockets. DH skies with his sunnies in his trouser pockets but mine are essentially filled with thigh and I tend to fall over and wouldn't want to land on them and break them so I am the one who sits there in the sunshine in my goggles.
We usually ski at Easter and 80% of the time there isn't even any snow on the pavements in the resorts (they are very quick at clearing them). Last year, it was 22 degrees in the sunshine one afternoon! Fortunately, I had my gym kit with me and so could wear my gym t-shirt.
Actually, thinking about the gym ... is there a pool in the hotel or in the resort? Might you end up there at all? What evening activities are you doing with the pupils?

Our essential is a hip flask full of Drambuie for passing to each other on the chairlift. Maybe not for a school trip though.

Try and up your exercise before you go! Unless you are very young or super fit - skiing is very physical and first few days can take it out of you. Great fun though!!

Thanks everyone this has been super helpful! It's good to know what to expect especially in april I didn't know if it would be warmer and therefore having to wear less.
I'm not entirely sure if I'm having lessons. I really hope so because I'm a complete beginner!
My role is apparently to do medications with another staff member so I'm not sure what's happening with that and if I'll need a bag with me or we take it in turns each day to be available somewhere.
I guess we will also be doing other activities such as sledging and visiting the town
