How much time do you spend on fitness each day?

On average, how much time do you spend on working out and being active (including walking) each day? How much do you stress over fitness? (and also some mindset questions.)

I'm trying to get more fit so joined a local gym. My only numbers goal is to get at least 10k steps a day, either through running or walking (treadmill or outdoor). That's at least 1 hour to 100 minutes each day just for walking/running. I don't aim for more. Then I do some other exercise like resistance training in the gym.

This means 3 hours/day including commuting from and to the gym. This is at least 5 days/week.

If I do less, I feel unfit and unhappy. But I also feel that that's a lot of working out. I have other projects I want to work on but I think there's a false dichotomy of 'devoting all to fitness' versus 'devoting to studies/work/projects'. I've focused on the latter most of my life and I don't think I'm happier. In fact, as I didn't restrict eating that much, I spent more time making foods and grocery shopping. Now I have a set number of ingredients to purchase and go in and out of supermarkets quickly.

In the past, I'm quite sedentary, maybe jog for 20-30 minutes, twice per week (if that). My BMI is 20-21 but I'm definitely skinny fat, like about 28% body fat. I don't look unhealthy but I am not happy with my body.

The key difference is that I have always been full-time employed, and fitness is almost always an afterthought, a chore. I'm unemployed now and looking to get employed full-time again, but my mind is messing me up. I fear that once I'm working full-time, I will just revert to old habits. I really want to change and become one of the fit people. Not exactly athletic, but having fitness as one of the things in their lives; mostly, I want to be a runner. (Used to be able to run 5k easy, but after just some time of being unfit, it's only 3k now! I hope to run 10k or more in the future.) The thing is, working full-time is itself a chore, stressful, and I tend to just want to watch TV and eat pasta once I get home.

I guess my other question is just, how much do you prioritise fitness in your life? And/or if you've shifted (becoming less/more active), how has it changed your life?

I work out 30-40 mins nearly every day, I do a mix of weighted workouts, hiit, pilates all at home. In addition to this I walk 30 mins daily during week so 5 x week. I probably have 1-2 rest days a week usually at the weekend when I'm out and about or at home doing things - I hardly rest at home as always something to do!!

During my time of the month I'm on the couch with a hot water bottle eating chocolate! I could be out for days but will do my daily 30min walk. I feel like this always sets me back and then I have to work to get my fitness back up so I've started to work out a little during time of the month.

As I've gotten older I feel I have to work out otherwise my body feels stiff which is not fun. I now see working out like brushing my teeth, part of my daily morning routine.
You sound pretty fit though OP, I would love to be able to run 3k!
I'm aiming to improve my fitness and strength and overall mobility and lose the weight I've piled on over the last few years even though I'm not overweight by any medical standard, just by my own standards lols.

Massively varies- today barely anything as just really busy at work from 8-6, tomorrow I’ll probably run for 90 mins. On average probably 30 mins a day running. But I am v lazy outside formal exercise. I don’t walk to many places.

nomorezoflora · 27/02/2025 19:57

I guarantee at least 40 minutes fast walking or equivalent; I do other stuff on top of that. I don't stress about it and I'll groan if it hits 9pm and I still need to my daily but then I'll go do it.

I'm over 50 and need to have that base minimum to stay alive, really. I'll do more on top on enthusiastic days which means 2-3 times a week a proper 3 hour hike or some half hour interval training, cycling etc.

When I was working it had to be fitted in. Now I'm not it can give some shape to my day. Either way, it's good for me and I've got an uninterrupted two years of that daily (the smart watch tracks me) - except one day that I spent in hospital on the operating table 😄Fair excuse I thought.

About 30-40 mins walking each day, 20-30 mins of that as fast as I can. And that’s it. Not interested in doing anything else. 44 and lots of health issues so that’s about as much as I can manage.

3 hours commitment a day for an average job, kids, relationship, person is a lot unless they can fit that in before the house wakes up.

I think you might benefit from reading about the importance of rest in a training regime OP, by professional athletes.

At least two hours. I walk to the supermarket, office and gym. I have a minimum 14k step count.
On top of that I run twice a week and do two weights / cardio workout classes.

Pickingmyselfup · 27/02/2025 20:58

Mine a week is...
Approx 3 hours walking the kids to school and back (less when I drive part way or I don't drop them off)

Approx 22 hours on my feet at work

Approx 6 hours running

3 hours weight lifting

2 hours of yoga

45 minutes of fitness pilates

So it's about 5 hours a day if we take the average.

I don't actually have a complete rest day unless I cram everything together but I'm taking yoga as "active rest day"

It feels a lot and it will only get worse as my running gets more intense. At the minute I'm only training for a half marathon but in a couple of months it will up to train for a full so I could be doing 3 hour runs at the weekend as well as the other 3 days. I don't think it's sustainable really, I'm knackered already. I think I might start driving the kids more and maybe condense the weight lifting into 2 days.

We will see what happens, I'm keeping it as it is for now.

30 mins run every morning.

Maybe two hours a day on average walking on my walking pad whilst working.

That's pretty much it for now. One day I'll get back to classes!

Kickbinit · 27/02/2025 21:04

30 minutes strength training 4 days a week, run the other 3 for 45 mins. Walk everyday 12-15,000 steps. However, I think the most important thing is consistency- I am now in my 50’s and have been doing this since my late 20’s. It really is for life.

Patterncarmen · 27/02/2025 21:16

60-70 minute morning walk with DH, 6x a week (I am taking Sundays off)

2-3 hours of somatic body exercises per week

45 minute yoga session per week. I’m in late 50s, and this keeps the aches and pains at bay.

I know I should do some strength training too…..
