Had to change the day im going to travel and buy another ticket as the one i have cant be changed...so now i have a fully paid London to Glasgow ticket on my hands.
Does anyone know a way of selling this, even if i got half the price back it would be better than losing the lot.

local FB?

you can get a refund usually less an admin fee

Doggymummar · 27/02/2025 11:59

I would have used it anyway and acted dumb if I were caught! It's a racket with trains, alternatively wait till the day and hope one of the connections is late and do a delay repay

Quinlan · 27/02/2025 12:01

They almost always offer a refund (for a fee so you don’t get the full amount back) but it’s usually not too high a fee. Unless you bought a super cheap ticket with no refund option.

Edited

Then you’d have had to pay a fine and/or buy another ticket anyway.

Each train company has a page like this...

It sounds as if it could be an Advance ticket, in which case refunds aren’t available.

jess991 · 27/02/2025 13:28

It was absiolutely forbidden to resell train tickets until a few years ago and the original purchaser could be prosecuted I believe. Now I think the rules have eased so its possible.

If I were you I would advertise it on Gumtree or ebay collection only and arrange to meet and hand over the ticket for cash but be careful about putting images of the ticket on the internet as the ticket number could be used by someone else

MiddleAgedDread · 27/02/2025 13:32

You can change it for a £10 admin fee and any difference in ticket cost Train Ticket Changes | Change Ticket | Avanti West Coast

ssd · 27/02/2025 15:10

Ive already bought another ticket to travel a few days later, its an advance ticket so no changes allowed.
I wondered if theres a way i could see it to get a bit of the cost back?

Sorry sell it

Like sell it privately but it might not be allowed

MiddleAgedDread · 27/02/2025 15:36

changes are allowed, read the link!! Why would it not be allowed to sell it privately? It's a train ticket, it's not even associated with your name like a flight would be. The only constraint would be if you booked it with a discount such as a railcard.

ssd · 27/02/2025 20:14

Oh jeez i just realised i did use a railcard

Who did you buy this ticket with? Because you can change advance ticket dates and times with every service, you just pay a fee of about £10 (and if the new ticket costs more, you also pay the difference). You didn’t need to buy a new ticket.

StarlightLady · 28/02/2025 04:05

You can’t change the original ticket but you might be able to get a refund (less admin fee) as suggested up thread. There is a difference between “no alterations” and “non refundable”.

Advance tickets are non-refundable. You can’t get a refund.
They can be altered, for a small fee. You can change the date and time of your journey. So it’s the opposite of what you said.

I said might be refundable. It depends on the operating company, for example on Great Western you can and possibly some others. We have privatisation to thank for these different rules for different lines, which is why the whole thing needs sorting out.
