Prescription swimming mask advice

Hi, My son has myopia (-1.5 in one eye and -1.25 in the other) and I want to get him a prescription swimming mask, something like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/387719643338?chn=ps&_ul=GB&var=654954997830&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A11AR33ldTTcCYsAFxk8zKVA45&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=710-134428-41853-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=654954997826_387719643338&targetid=2425733423477&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9191757&poi=&campaignid=21697391927&mkgroupid=162558106770&rlsatarget=pla-2425733423477&abcId=10027104&merchantid=5514217755&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAt4C-BhBcEiwA8Kp0CQaZT9m8Haedzd4HuJNk_GBD0Y_lOZcoLpZDCCg0vfQ2X_FFLIarYhoC1ygQAvD_BwE

He find goggles really uncomfortable so it has to be a mask fit but all the ones I can find start at -2 rather than -1.5. Does anyone know if this will be useable or will it hurt his eyes/be blurry?

How old is your DS ?

What reason does he need to see under water ?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 27/02/2025 13:48

It's not a huge prescription, can he not cope without?

arapunzel · 27/02/2025 13:52

Have a chat with your local opticians - ask to see the Dispensing Optician who can advise on an appropriate fit and discuss the prescription to order. They will also take all the measurements required.

Prescription goggles/mask are a game changer for a child in the pool. My daughter has a slightly higher prescription goggles than she needs and think it's fine but -1.25 to -2 is a leap. Decathalon have decent prescription goggles and not too pricey x

Charcadet · 27/02/2025 15:16

Mine don't bother - their eyes are about the same prescription. It's tiny. I have goggles from the optician as I'm -9 ish in both eyes

We paddleboard so he'd like to be able to see while we do that and he can't read the clock in the swimming pool and know when to get out. Also, it would mean he could look at fish and things in the water when we're on holidays. Decathlon only do goggle style not mask and he finds the goggles he has really uncomfortable. Maybe I'll take him to try some on and see if they're better, but we don't have one near us so it'll have to wait a while. Thanks all!

I wear varifocal glasses daily

I wear a normal mask for scuba diving ( non prescription)

The water does distort

I manage

Oceangirl82 · 27/02/2025 15:54

Just go to optician as you would for normal glasses, they are not too expensive compared to normal glasses.

Darkclothes, thank you so much! I found a pair that look perfect from your link and have ordered. Fingers crossed they fit and are comfortable.

Hi, how do you order those from Decathlon? I looked up online and found only adult goggles or mad wave inserts.

WHM0101 · 01/03/2025 08:50

I was given this link but haven't tried yet, Decathlon would be an easier option

I wouldn't bother with that prescription. I did a lot of swimming as a child and it was only once my prescription reached -3/-4ish that I felt the need for correction in the pool. Briefly had a pair of prescription goggles but then I got contact lenses and so wore those with normal goggles.

Pools aren't visually very complex environments for the most part. Provided you can judge how far away the end is when you're close to it and see the outlines of other swimmers, you're OK.
