Adult Loose Teeth Advice -

Posting for traffic…I last went for a check up in December (2024) and my dentist said I had Grade 1 (I think) mobility that she would monitor and to go back in June. She was a bit puzzled because my hygiene is excellent (according to her) - no sign of gum disease or anything like that and my last x-ray was normal too. For context though, I do grind/clench my teeth (and have a mouthguard), which I’m wondering may be the cause.

Anyway, I’d sort of forgotten about it but then it popped into my mind and so I’ve just gently tried to move my teeth and I can feel definite movement, particularly in my front two teeth. Obviously this is concerning. I will book into the dentist to get it checked again soon but does anyone have any experience with this and what it might mean long term. Can it be halted, fixed etc or am I destined to lose my teeth?! When I’ve tried to Google it, it really only brings up information relevant to if it’s caused by gum disease.

For reference, I’m 49 and perimenopausal, in case that’s relevant. I also have a tooth missing upper back left (third, including wisdom tooth, in - not sure of the name). One filling in the same tooth the other side.

Any info will be gratefully received! Thank you.

My front tooth has been walk about. In my thirties for no obvious reason, it started moving and created a gap between my front teeth which I hated. I had an X-ray and was told that the bone had deteriorated a bit and my Dentist put a split across the tooth to fix it in place with the tooth next to it. If I gently tried, I could rock it back and fro.
I was paranoid about that tooth and tried not to put pressure on it.
The splint kept breaking but my tooth did go back on it’s own after a few years and a later X-ray of the bone came back ok. No problems since.

A true conversation I had with my dentist:

" All my teeth have gone loose"
"What? That can't happen. Let's see.... Oh, all your teeth are loose!... must be hormonal"

That was more than thirty years ago and I still have all my teeth. I do grind my teeth and that definitely has something to do with it, especially when only one or two get loose. They generally tighten up again after a while.

Thank you both for sharing your experience. It sounds like it’s not a foregone conclusion that I’ll end up toothless 😂 so I’ll take that as a positive! I do have a tendency to jump to the worst case scenario!
