Sort from top to bottom, or bottom to top.

We need a big house sort out, we need to get rid of stuff that is lying around not being used. Would you start at the bottom of the house and work up, or the other way around? Or does it not even matter?! Any good tips for anyone that’s done a big house sort out. We not quite in the league of BBCs Sort your life out, but I’d say every room has excess clutter!

By room, top to bottom.

within each room, drawer by drawer , or area by area.

3 boxes

  1. Recycling / out
    2.Charity shop or resale
  1. Needs to go to another room. (smallest box)

I give family, then friends, first pick of box 2. It does feel better if I can pass something useful on.

Just remember that great feeling when it’s done.

Decluttering often produces dust so I'd always start at the top and work down

3 bags: charity / rubbish / recycling

Be brutal

Don't keep crap. Don't try and save the planet. Donating stuff to charity that they can't sell on means they'll just bin it instead of you.

Give stuff away don't sell it - don't decide to be an entrepreneur just get it gone.

Good luck!

don't get diverted

if something belongs in another room say an article of clothing just return to bedroom until you are decluttering bedroom. unless it is obviously for the bin

other tips say if starting with the attic apart from christmas tree just decide I will keep 1,2 ,3 or 4 boxes of decor, you can keep whch ones you like but what you keep has to fit into the space available

if you haven't mended or repaired something in a couple of months you aren't going to so just get rid

don't give stuff to charity unless actually in good condition. they are often charged to take things to landfill

it is just as much waste sitting in your loft being unused as being in landfill you are just postponing the landfill date, this applies to unworn clothing unused toys gadgets kitchen appliances unread books

decide a value ( this depends on your financial situation) so I'm only going to try and sell something if it is worth more than £20/30/40/50/100

if you do decide to sell get it listed immediately whether ebay vinted or facebook and give it a max of 2 weeks then recycle

once you have boxes for landfill charity recycling get them out of the house into car boot

in general do not throw other peoples stuff away without asking

You can't put stuff away if the place you want to put it is already full, so I'd start with the loft first and work downwards. We need to do this, so loft first, then cupboards & furniture in spare rooms. Once that's done and we've made some space, we stand more of a fighting chance of being able to sort the rest out.

Fingers crossed😂

Loads of great tips already. We actually moved house last year but I don’t think we were brutal enough. We moved into a bigger house so it doesn’t look bad, but every cupboard just seems full and not well organised. I’m not bothered about selling on, we’ve got a local charity shop for anything decent, and we’re not far from the tip!
