Notice of eviction and mental health

I'm really desperate. I've been given a notice of eviction as my landlord is selling. I'm a single parent with no family support and two children, one of which is autistic.
I've just overcome a really bad depressive episode over Christmas and now this..I'm so scared this will break me mentally.
I'm not sleeping and feel sick with worry constantly.
I really don't know what to do

Handhold.

What are your finances like to be able to secure another rental.

I'm my send child's carer. So I'm not working. Which makes things difficult for private let

You need to -
Go round the estate agents and register your immediate interest
Go to the council and give them the letter of eviction and make them aware that you are house hunting but need to be on their radar in case nothing comes up
Wait
Keep in touch with the estate agents and the council on a weekly basis
Pack and get rid of things you no longer need - you are moving and you do need to pack
Save money for moving costs
If nothing comes up you will present yourself and your children as homeless and be housed maybe temporarily until something becomes available

Definitely do the estate agents and the council though, and then wait and prepare. Good luck x

Excellent advise. Registering your interest to every EA you can might mean if anything comes up they let you view straight away and if you can afford it you could get in an early application. Out of interest where in the country do you live?

This is excellent advice, I can't really add anything to it. It sounds very stressful but you will get through this.

Whatisthisbs · 26/02/2025 08:15

Also try OpenRent - that's purely online and you can deal with landlords directly. Good luck op

FoxLoxInSox · 26/02/2025 08:19

Contact Shelter for excellent advice and support.

Yes I second Open Rent. Also, call any and every advert (within your price range obvs) as sometimes even ones which don’t look promising might be ok. Check Right Move every couple/few hours - I found that setting up notifications didn’t work for me as they came through on email and weren’t that quick at updating (I probably set it up wrong mind you) so it was easier to just ‘manually’ check every couple of hours.
one other thing, I don’t know what court times are like where you are but where I am (South-East), it’s months and months for evictions to get to the point at which bailiffs attend. I also work for a housing charity so I know this.
best of luck op, I really feel for you.

p.s wrt your MH, please please reach out to someone, professionals, family, anyone. You don’t have to suffer alone 😔

I think you should get in touch with your council housing department. With a SEND child I would have thought that would make you fairly high priority and with a pretty good chance of getting housed by them and most importantly for you in the long term, a secure tenancy.

yes, of course this would be best but in my area (different to OP mind you), the wait time for social housing, even a family with children with SEN who have been given a Band A, is currently several YEARS. So, in the meantime it’s temporary accommodation.
the system is totally fucked and past breaking point
