To give a newborn a house tour

At work today I was talking to a pregnant colleague and she said it will be so strange taking a baby home and what do you actually do with a baby when you get home from hospital and I said with mine I took them on a tour of the house to show themwhere everything is and where they would be sleeping. By this point other colleagues had joined the conversation and thought it was funny and weird that I did this. I assumed most people would do this when they bring their babies home. Am i weird or is this normal 🙈🤣🤣

I hadn’t even thought of doing this!!

Since they can’t see clearly much further than their own hand I thought as long they were warm, clean and fed we were doing ok!

Bluevelvetsofa · 25/02/2025 20:40

I did a tour too. Showed him round the house, chatted to him and told him about his family.

I did this with the puppy too!

I did this too, with a kitten!

We did this with ours too. I knew they wouldn't be able to see it all or understand but they could smell it and hear acoustics and stuff. Maybe it's weird but it's what you'd do with someone new moving in!

WhatDidIComeInThisRoomFor · 25/02/2025 20:44

That’s so sweet. And a good way to start chatting to your baby. Once it’s just you and them at home each day it can be a bit quiet and talking to your baby about every day life is so important.

I think when we came home, DS went in the Moses basket, I sat on the sofa, someone gave me a glass of champagne which I thought I was looking forward to as we’d been in hospital a week, also I hadn’t drunk anything alcoholic for the whole of my pregnancy. Sadly it tasted really odd to me and I opted for a cup of tea whilst just looking at him sleeping.

Darkwaters · 25/02/2025 20:46

Doing a tour didn’t even cross my mind but I think it’s a beautiful sentiment.

I did this too, with a kitten!

I think I was soppier with the labrador than with my human baby (who we took to Costas on the way home and he got cooed over by a bunch of old ladies who had been to a knitting club).

YourGoldHedgehog · 25/02/2025 20:47

It’s fine! Very nice to do. We did house tours trying to settle our newborn for sleep.

I think there is no guide to know what to do when coming home. Suddenly here is this mini human. Like another poster, we had McDonalds and ate it but it was all so different we just stared at the sleeping baby. When DC woke up we both changed the nappy.

Saucery · 25/02/2025 20:49

We did this! We’d been in hospital for two weeks after his birth, DS and I, so it was lovely to be home. I’ll always remember the looks on our cats’ faces (where the actual fuck have YOU been then and what the actual fuck is THAT???) and DH stopping by the fridge telling DS that’s where we keep things like ice cream…..”You like milk, so you’ll probably like ice cream, it’s fab!” Grin

Babyboomtastic · 25/02/2025 20:50

It's cute

My first, I chilled on an armchair and invited my best friend (and mother) who happened to be driving past my city to pop in. They arrived after I'd been home about 30 minutes and it was lovely to see them.

My second, I sat and ate a takeaway curry whilst watching Aquaman (that I fell asleep to). Our first was still at grandparents so we could settle home together for the night.

Both were lovely.

fruitj · 25/02/2025 20:52

Aww I think that's cute. I can't even remember what we did when we brought DS home. I was exhausted. My parents drove us back (we didn't have a car) and I probably went to bed!

My DD was born at home (as planned) so got to see the living room (where she was born) and then I took her into the bedroom and we slept, I remember it feeling so magical. I called my family in the morning and as my aunt lives closest she came round first to meet her and she made a (lovely) fuss of us and I felt like an absolute superhero!

reelcat · 25/02/2025 20:52

I did!

Honeypickle · 25/02/2025 20:54

I think that’s really lovely - but I bet you won’t do it with your second/third!!! Seriously though, very sweet and well done you x

Bringmeahigherlove · 25/02/2025 20:54

I did the same thing. Showed her where she was going to live for the next 18 (probably more) years. Not weird at all!

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 25/02/2025 20:55

I think it's great!
I done the same with my daughter.
I know she couldn't see or understand etc.
me and my husband had waited so long and had basically had an empty floor in our home (we live in a 3 storey house) that was waiting for our 3 rd member of the family to come home too!

I was so excited to have her home!!

Maboscelar · 25/02/2025 20:55

I did this with mine. They were born at home but I gave them a tour and showed them all the rooms. It felt like the right thing to do so they would know where they were.

WonderingAboutThus · 25/02/2025 20:59

Weird and lovely. Would have never occurred to me.

ClassicBBQ · 25/02/2025 21:06

I sat on the sofa bawling my eyes out, wondering how I'd ever shit, wee or shag again 😆

I brought my niece on a tour of her parents house when she came home as my sister had a c-section so couldn’t carry her.
Seems perfectly normal to me.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 25/02/2025 21:08

That's adorable.

I put mine down in her car seat on the kitchen floor and burst into tears.

You're is better 🤣

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 25/02/2025 21:09

@Alliscalmallisnotbright I'm sure I gave my niece a tour of my house! She's now 10 and never away from mine haha

Lostworlds · 25/02/2025 21:10

My baby crawled into the downstairs bathroom yesterday and it dawned on me that he’d never been there before. All day he kept crawling in there, must of thought it was a new magical place 😂

love the idea of a home tour- going to be honest, whenever I go to someone’s house for the first time I always wish they would show me around 😂

MumChp · 25/02/2025 21:10

Cute.
Our oldest was born at home but none of our newborns has a housetour.

Pippinsdiary · 25/02/2025 21:11

Differentstarts · 25/02/2025 20:10

Ok I didn't realise I genuinely thought everyone would do this but obviously not 🤣🤣

I did and went to show her her bedroom, obviously!

1984Winston · 25/02/2025 21:12

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 25/02/2025 20:10

I just gazed at her in the Moses basket whilst shovelling a McDonald's into my mouth at the speed of light 😂

Same 🤣 for my second anyway!
